SACRAMENTO, Calif. (WKRC) – A simple pizza craving turned into a life-changing event for McKinley Nelson and his wife.
The couple ordered from Round Table Pizza, which shares a building with Winters Wine & Liquor. Nelson needed change for a tip and decided to buy two lottery tickets with a $100 bill.
"I think it was $20, and I went to the truck and started scratching," Nelson recalled to California Lottery officials. To his surprise, one of the tickets turned out to be a million-dollar winner. "I think this one’s a million, but I’m not sure," he told his wife.
Using the California Lottery App, Nelson confirmed that his LOTERIA™ GRANDE Scratchers ticket was indeed a winner. "So, my wife almost had a heart attack," he said, adding that they still had to go inside to buy the pizza.
Nelson, a 72-year-old retired veteran, has been playing the California Lottery since it began 40 years ago. "It took a long time to win," he said.
With his newfound fortune, Nelson plans to pay off his home, save some money, and purchase a camper van. He and his wife are looking forward to visiting family in the south and beyond.
