CINCINNATI (WKRC) – As the weather cools and rain becomes more frequent, the risk of slips, falls, and broken bones increases, according to the team at OrthoCincy.
Dr. Amelia Wiggins, an orthopaedic surgeon at OrthoCincy, emphasized the importance of bone health, stating, "When your bones are weak you’re going to be more susceptible to a fracture. If you fall down, you will be at a higher risk to break a bone."
Dr. Wiggins noted that bone health is crucial to prevent fractures, especially as people age. "Bone health is so important because we don’t want you to fall as you get older we don’t want you to break a bone from a fall," she said. She suggested that the skeletons seen during Halloween should serve as a reminder to maintain strong bones through proper exercise. "Any weight-bearing activity and strength training will help to build your bones," she advised.
Dr. Wiggins highlighted the significance of bone health for young people, explaining, "You actually have until the age of 30 to build the bones to be as big and as dense as they’re going to be. After the age of 30 there’s going to be a gradual decline." To combat this decline, she recommended a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, alongside weight-bearing exercises such as brisk walking and strength training.
For those who experience falls and require evaluation, OrthoCincy offers orthopaedic urgent care at several of its centers.
