Britain’s biggest sporting goods retailer will open its first Australian store in Melbourne’s Fountain Gate shopping centre this weekend – with beefed up security to prevent theft – as it launches a push to unseat the country’s dominant chain Rebel Sport.
Sports Direct is backed by billionaire Mike Ashley and has more than 700 outlets around the world. Ashley is the largest shareholder in London-listed Frasers Group, which also owns the House of Fraser and Slazenger brands.
