The Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) is taking major steps to protect its widely consumed Nandini ghee brand after a surge in counterfeit products surfaced across the state. A detailed digital traceability system is being put in place, with QR codes soon to be printed on every Nandini ghee pack to help customers confirm authenticity instantly.

The move comes shortly after Central Crime Branch (CCB) officers busted a network involved in producing and supplying fake Nandini ghee. The racket reportedly used packaging closely resembling the original brand, enabling large-scale consumer deception. Investigations are still underway, and the crackdown has prompted KMF to accelerate its safety measures.
Under the new plan, the QR code will allow customers to scan and receive complete information about the product’s journey. The digital record will show where the ghee was manufactured, from which KMF depot it was dispatched, and which retailer received the stock. This level of transparency is aimed at helping consumers immediately differentiate between genuine and fake products.
KMF’s management has stated that the system will provide direct awareness to the public, ensuring that customers no longer fall prey to deceptive packaging practices. The traceability initiative is currently in the implementation stage, with technical and procedural work progressing.

To finalise the system, KMF has already held consultations with food specialists and quality experts. The packaging revamp is expected to be completed soon, after which QR-coded ghee packs will enter the market across Karnataka.
