It rains in Disney World. A LOT.
If you’re visiting in the late summer, especially, it might rain every single day of your trip. And though you might be able to take a break from the parks if it’s raining one day, you won’t want to miss a huge chunk of EVERY day due to weather — you’ve got to get your money’s worth! Thus, the poncho princess was invented.
Recently, we shared a video of Sage dancing in the rain on Main Street, U.S.A. (you know, as one does), and a follower left a comment that coined a new phrase for us!
Our follower @travel.destinations.by.amanda called herself a “Poncho Princess,” saying she doesn’t stop her park day when the rain starts! And you know what? We love that attitude.
So we’re here to tell you what a Poncho Princess does when it starts raining…and spoiler alert — it sounds like a really fun park day!
This may seem obvious, but when the rain starts kicking up in Disney World, the first thing a Poncho Princess will do is whip out their trusty poncho. Now, there are a few different options for purchasing a poncho. You could get dollar-store ponchos and keep multiple on hand so you always have a dry one at the ready.
You could also go for a fancier poncho that’ll last you through multiple rewears. Our favorite one recently has been the Frogg Toggs Poncho that you can snag on Amazon. Multiple members of our team own one, and we love it! It comes with a little storage bag so all your stuff doesn’t get wet, and you don’t feel like you’re wearing a trash bag when you have it on!
Of course, if you forget the poncho ahead of time, you can always snag one in Disney gift shops. They’re a little overpriced, but they’re better than nothing!

Now, if you’re going to all the trouble of wearing the poncho, you’ll want to actually keep yourself AND your belongings dry. This means Poncho Princesses are putting their backpacks and purses UNDERNEATH the cover of the poncho. They’re roomy for a reason, people!
And if you’re a Poncho Princess who’s really prepared, you might even have these protective shoe covers. We wear them on rainy days, and they’re a lifesaver if you hate wet socks.
A Poncho Princess knows there’s no point in putting on a poncho now if you’re just going to wear a soaking wet bag later. Think ahead!

Let a little (or a lot of) rain get you down? No way! The Poncho Princess knows that when the weather starts to get gloomy, it’s time to suit up and go on about their day. Sure, some outdoor attractions may close if there’s lightning in the area, but there will still be plenty of rides to ride, shows to watch, snacks to eat, and a theme park to explore!
And you know what? If you’re already getting wet, it seems like the perfect time to ride Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or Kali River Rapids. Why not?! (As long as there’s no lightning and they’re still open.)
The parks don’t close for a thunderstorm (only if there’s a major hurricane), so you’ll still be able to go on about your day as usual. Albeit a little damp. You can still have a great time!
And of course, if you’re going to have a fun-filled rainy day in the theme parks, then you need to snap a picture of it! There’s something fun and whimsical about a goofy poncho picture in front of the park icons. It’s the “ahh, yes, we’ve all been there” feeling.
It shows that you roll with the punches and can go with the flow to have a good time. Plus, we’re sure all of your followers would love a video of you dancing in the rain in front of the Tree of Life. Bonus points if you set it to “Africa” by Toto.
So there you go — the life of a Poncho Princess. Are you this type of person, or do you avoid the rain at all costs? Tell us in the comments!
