Last month was fall prevention awareness month and though it is no longer September, Lisa Bell from Senior Helpers joined "Good Morning Charleston" to help share special tips on how to keep seniors safe from falls all year long.
According to the National Council on Ageing, older adults are treated in the emergency room for fall injuries every 11 seconds in the United States.
According to Bell this statistic can likely be attributed to weakness in the muscles of elderly individuals, medications, worsening vision, home hazards and other complications that come with getting older.
In order to prevent falls, Bell states that a few simple adjustments can be made. Her examples include stowing cords away and off the floor where they can avoid becoming an easy tripping hazard, secure rugs to the floor with rubberized mats or double sided tape and keeping pet toys clear from areas where they can become a tripping hazard.
Installing improved lighting can also help will falls by better illuminating the floor and areas where hazards may be hiding.
The Senior Helpers group is also able to help seniors in need by assigning caregivers who can offer care and companionship to those in need.
