LOS ANGELES, CA – A group of self-described crypto influencers trying to pull off a “viral marketing stunt” for their digital coin wound up filming their own arrest after sneaking up to the Hollywood Sign and attempting to cover one of the letters with a massive tarp.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, six members of a cryptocurrency crew trespassed all the way up to the Hollywood Sign on Monday in an attempt to hang a banner over the letter “O.”
Police say all six were arrested without incident, though the crew had already managed to capture the entire operation on camera before being detained.
The video, originally posted to X (formerly Twitter), showed the group narrating their “mission” step-by-step before their plans unraveled.
In the clip, one member — identified as Jake Hillhouse — can be heard jokingly narrating:
“Step one, get supplies. Step two, and probably the hardest step, build the tarp. … Step five — well, this isn’t really a step — we all got arrested.”
The video reached nearly one million views before it was deleted from the platform, but not before viewers dubbed the group “the dumbest marketing team in crypto history.”
According to KTLA News, the stunt was designed to promote PumpFun, a cryptocurrency network that claims to let users “invest in creators and internet personalities to monetize their success in new ways.”
The idea was to hang a massive branded tarp over the Hollywood Sign for social media clout — but instead, it backfired spectacularly, landing all six members in police custody and triggering a public trespassing investigation.
An LAPD spokesperson confirmed that trespassing charges are likely, though it remains unclear if additional charges will be filed for vandalism or property damage.
The Hollywood Sign — one of the most heavily monitored landmarks in the United States — has 24/7 surveillance cameras, motion sensors, and patrols designed to stop exactly this kind of stunt.
“People think it’s easy to climb, but it’s one of the most secure areas in Los Angeles,” one officer said. “We catch almost everyone who tries this.”
The internet wasted no time roasting the stunt. Comments poured in across Reddit and X, calling the incident:
Even fellow crypto enthusiasts mocked the attempt, saying the “PumpFun” crew proved their project’s name a little too literally by pumping their own hype before crashing straight into handcuffs.
