She had never bought a Powerball ticket before, then a stranger’s comment changed her life forever – MLive.com

LANSING, MI — Sharonda Blunt wasn’t planning on buying a Powerball ticket for the drawing held on Sept. 1. In fact, she’d never even bought a Powerball ticket in her life.
But a chance conversation led the 44-year-old Detroit woman to pick up a ticket, and it paid off in a big way as she won a $1 million prize in the drawing.
“I was talking to a guy in line at the store and he was telling me about the Powerball game and he bought a ticket, so I told the cashier to give me one too,” Blunt said. “A few days later, I was with my family and my aunt mentioned that a $1 million Powerball prize was won at the CVS in Grosse Pointe. It got me thinking, so I took out my ticket and had her read off the winning numbers.
“When she read five of my numbers, I grabbed her phone to see for myself and then started screaming and hollering when I saw I won $1 million! Winning a prize like this is truly a blessing.”
Blunt matched all five white numbers drawn — 08-23-25-40-53 — to win her prize. She bought the winning ticket at the CVS, located at 18585 East Warren Avenue in Grosse Pointe.
While Blunt has claimed her prize, she didn’t share any of her plans for the money.
“Beginners luck proved true for Sharonda Blunt who purchased her first Powerball ticket ever after hearing about the game while in line at the store and then won a $1 million prize!” said Michigan Lottery Commissioner Suzanna Shkreli.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Breakfast Club lottery club which claimed a $842 million jackpot in June 2024. The members plan to use the money to buy a home in Florida and travel.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a Powerball winner worth $250,000 sold in Bloomfield Hills in 2024 went unclaimed. That money went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
