TEMPLE, Texas — When Samuel Andrade and Crystela Garcia went to distribute tips to their employees at La Monarca Cravings in Temple, they discovered something was missing. The tip jar had vanished, leaving hardworking staff members without the money they had earned.
“I give my employees their tips every night and I had asked my employees, I was like, ‘do you guys know where the tip jar is?'” Garcia recalled. “Nobody knew.”
Security camera footage revealed the unsettling truth: a DoorDash delivery worker picking up an order had taken the jar. For Garcia and Andrade, who have operated their Temple location for two years, it was a devastating blow.
“It just breaks my heart to see that somebody would, somebody actually that’s picking up an order from DoorDash would do that,” Garcia said.
Breaking the news to employees was particularly difficult.
“It was a little disappointing because my employees work very hard for their tips, you know, some of them are here from open to close,” Garcia said.
What happened next transformed a story of theft into one of community compassion. Garcia shared the incident on Facebook, not expecting much response. Instead, the Temple community flooded La Monarca Cravings with support.
“I was just sharing something on my Facebook and I didn’t think it was going to be a big deal, but the way they all came together, it was just amazing,” Garcia said.
“It’s very overwhelming on how the community came together and they came to support us,” Andrade added.
Local photographer Nick Lopez offered a complimentary photo shoot for the business. Community member Alicia Johnson donated $200 in tips for the employees to share. Customers poured into the snack spot, filling tip jars and lifting spirits.
In a statement to 6 News, Johnson said:
“I’m the owner of Right Up Your Ally Cleaning Service. As a newer small business owner in our community, I’ve seen first hand the impact that kindness and support can have on our neighbors and friends, which is why I was compelled to make a donation to a local small business after their tip jar was stolen. I know how hard these employees work, and I couldn’t bear the thought of them losing out on tips that are such a vital part of their income. At the heart of any successful business are the people who keep it running day in and day out and for me, it’s their team — their hard work, dedication and pride in what they do. It was my pleasure to help, and I hope that my small act of kindness inspires others to pay it forward. In our community, we look out for each other, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.”
Then came an ending no one expected. While Nick Lopez was conducting the free photo shoot at the restaurant, someone walked through the door—the same delivery worker who had taken the jar.
“I just turned around in disbelief,” Garcia said. “He was like, ‘I brought the tip jar and the money is all in there.’ He was like, ‘I’m sorry.'”
Garcia’s response reflected grace under surprising circumstances.
“I was just in shock, but I’m just glad he did the right thing,” Garcia told 6 News.
The experience has deepened the owners’ commitment to their community. While they’re grateful for the support, they’re also paying it forward.
“I know a lot of people are going through hard times right now,” Garcia said. “If anybody ever needs anything, some water, a drink, even some ice cream, and you don’t have any money, you can come and ask and we will give that to you guys.”
For this small business, the message to the Temple community is clear: they appreciate every customer who walks through their doors. And while they’re happy to help those in need, Garcia added one gentle request with a smile:
“Don’t be shy to come ask. Just don’t steal anything.”
