SOLON, Ohio — A man, believing that he was receiving a hot stock tip directly from Elon Musk ended up losing several thousands dollars.
At 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21, the 70-year-old Solon man went to the Solon police station to report that he had been victimized by a scam. He said that he was contacted by somebody on the “X” app purporting to be X and Tesla owner Elon Musk. “Musk,” he said, had for him some investing advice.
The man was directed onto the “Telegram” app, where he continued the conversation about investing. He was convinced to set up an account with “teslastocktrade.com” and made in August an initial investment of $1,000.
He continued to make investments on the bogus website, but eventually caught on that it was a scam. He found himself at a loss for $18,000.
Detectives are investigating. Police noted that Elon Musk is not believed to be involved.
