SAWYER, Minnesota — Law enforcement continues to ask for tips in a 50-year-old Carlton County murder case.
According to the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Henry William Soukkala was found dead in his home on Oct. 31, 1975.
Investigators believe Soukkala was woken up by an intruder, and a confrontation took place before he was shot and killed. His phone was found ripped from the wall when his body was discovered.
Lieutenant Douglas Rotta with the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office told KARE 11 that physical evidence was collected at the murder scene, which was retested in 2016 to try to obtain a DNA profile. However, current DNA technology did not produce a DNA profile from the physical evidence.
Soukkala, 66, lived in Sawyer, Minnesota. It’s believed he was killed sometime between 9 p.m. on Oct. 29 and 6 a.m. on Oct. 30. A neighbor who lived about a mile away reportedly heard shots around 5:10 a.m. on Oct. 30.
Lieutenant Rotta said they have not received any new information and have no open leads in the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office at 218-384-4185.
