BALTIMORE — An Accokeek man who describes himself as “just a lucky guy” claimed a $30,000 Mega Millions prize Wednesday at Maryland Lottery headquarters, one number shy of the massive $980 million jackpot from the Nov. 14 drawing.
The Prince George’s County resident, who asked to remain anonymous, matched four of the five white balls plus the gold Mega Ball. That combination normally pays $10,000, but the 3X Megaplier drawn that night tripled the third-tier prize to $30,000.
Accompanied by his son when he collected the winnings Nov. 26, the father said he focuses almost exclusively on the multi-state games and had a strong feeling about his ticket.
“I told my son, ‘Think about winning,’” the winner recalled. “After the drawing I saw Maryland had three third-tier winners and told him, ‘I think one of them was me.’ Turns out I was right.”
He purchased the lucky ticket at Big B Liquors, 7099 Indian Head Highway in Bryans Road, just across the county line from Accokeek.
While $30,000 is far from the record jackpot won that night on a single ticket sold in Georgia, the winner said the money will still make a meaningful difference. He plans to use the prize for home repairs, to help pay down his son’s student loans, and to fund an upcoming family vacation he had already booked for his wife and son.
“I don’t usually spend a lot on myself,” he added.
The winner told Lottery officials he intends to keep playing, declaring with confidence, “I’m going to hit again. I’ll be back.”
Maryland had three third-tier Mega Millions winners from the Nov. 14 drawing, the others sold in Frederick and Prince George’s counties. The jackpot reset to $50 million after the Georgia winner claimed the ninth-largest prize in U.S. lottery history.
Big B Liquors in Bryans Road receives a $300 bonus from the Lottery for selling the $30,000 ticket.

Get your Powerball tickets ready because the jackpot continues to climb.
After no grand prize winner from the Saturday, Nov. 29 drawing, the Powerball jackpot for Monday, Dec. 1 rose to $740 million with a cash value of $346.1 million. It’s now approaching the top 10 biggest Powerball jackpots as 2025 nears to a close.
The last time the jackpot approached these levels happened this fall, when it reached $1.787 billion for the Sept. 6 drawing. That grand prize — the second largest in the game’s history — was won by a winning ticket purchased in Missouri and another in Texas.
Ready to try your luck with Powerball? Here’s everything you need to know.
The winning numbers from the Saturday, Nov. 29 drawing were 19-22-30-32-59, and the Powerball was 1. The Power Play was 2X.
No, no ticket had all five white Powerball numbers and the red Powerball to win the $719 million jackpot. A ticket in Florida matched the five white balls to win $1 million.
The next drawing will be Monday, Dec. 1 at 10:59 p.m. ET.
In Delaware, tickets may be purchased until 9:45 p.m. ET on the day of the drawing.
In New Jersey and Pennsylvania, you can purchase tickets until 9:59 p.m.
Powerball drawings are held three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET.
The Powerball costs $2 per play.
In Pennsylvania, you can buy tickets online: www.pailottery.com/games/draw-games/.
Tickets can be bought online as well in New Jersey: njlotto.com.
To play, select five numbers from 1 to 69 for the white balls, then select one number from 1 to 26 for the red Powerball.
You can choose your lucky numbers on a play slip or let the lottery terminal randomly pick your numbers.
To win, match one of the nine ways to win:
There’s a chance to have your winnings increased two, three, four, five and 10 times through the Power Play for an additional $1 per play. Players can multiply non-jackpot wins up to 10 times when the jackpot is $150 million or less.
All prizes are set cash amounts, except for the grand prize. In California, prize payout amounts are pari-mutuel, meaning it’s determined by the sales and the number of winners.
The odds of winning the Powerball grand prize are 1 in 292,201,338. The odds for the lowest prize, $4 for one red Powerball, are 1 in 38.32.
According to Powerball, the overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 24.87, based on a $2 play and rounded to two decimal places.

Matthew Shepherd of Burnsville sat at home bored on Wednesday afternoon so he tried a $5 digital instant and won a $952,821 jackpot.
“I was just killing time out of boredom,” he recalled. “When it stopped at the jackpot I was like, ‘There’s no way.’”
Shepherd, 35, won the top level “Grand Fortune” jackpot in the Monopoly game. The digital instant game features a progressive jackpot that can be won at any time. The odds of that win were 1 in 10 million.
“I was ecstatic,” Shepherd said. “I would’ve been happy to just double my money.”
He claimed his prize Monday at lottery headquarters and, after required federal and state tax withholdings, took home $683,651.
Shepherd plans to use his winnings to invest and possibly buy a new truck.
After his big win, the jackpot reset at $150,000 and has climbed over $431,000 as of Monday afternoon.
Monopoly is a multi-state digital instant game. That means the progressive jackpots will grow higher, faster and winners could come from other states as well.
Digital instant games are played exclusively online on the lottery’s website or on the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Fifty-nine different games are available to play online now.
Yancey County received $30 million in state grants funded by the lottery to help with school construction needs. For details on other ways money raised by the lottery made a difference in Yancey County last year, visit www.nclottery.com and click on the “Impact” section.
