Dr. Robin Hudson, a pediatrician at Tidelands Health, is giving families tips for a safe Halloween.
Traffic Safety
Trick-or-treating can pose risks for traffic safety, with one study citing the risk of pedestrian fatalities as 43% higher on Halloween compared with other evenings.
Stay Visible
Hudson advised using glow-in-the-dark accessories, flashlights and/or reflective tape to stay visible in the dark.
Check the Treats
Hudson gave parents an important reminder to check for spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious looking items.
Offer Treats for All
If you're planning on handing out candy, Hudson advised offering glow sticks, stickers, bubbles and/or nut-free or gluten-free candy options for those with allergies.
If doing this, you can set out a teal pumpkin on your porch, which signals a safe stop for kids with allergies.

Have a Safety Plan
Hudson said it's a good idea to create a safety plan before leaving home. This includes where to meet if you’re separated, and how to call 911 if needed.
