MOREHEAD, Ky. — Fraternities and sororities often receive negative attention for their actions on college campuses. However, beyond the few “bad apples,” many Greek organizations are deeply committed to leadership, service, and philanthropy. A shining example can be found at Morehead State University, where the Nu Theta Chapter of Kappa Sigma Fraternity is raising funds to support the Fisher House Foundation and its mission to aid military and veteran families.
Fisher House Foundation builds comfort homes where military and veteran families can stay free of charge while their loved ones receive medical care. These homes—located at military and VA medical centers worldwide—feature up to 21 suites, each with private bedrooms and baths, along with shared kitchens, laundry facilities, and inviting common areas. Since its founding, the Foundation’s work has saved military and veteran families an estimated $610 million in out-of-pocket lodging and transportation costs.
The Morehead State Kappa Sigma chapter recently partnered with the Morehead Optimist Club during a bingo session at Cave Run Bingo in Farmers, Kentucky, raising funds and awareness for Fisher House. Their collaborative efforts resulted in a $1,500 donation from the Optimist Club to benefit the Foundation.
Kappa Sigma Fraternity, founded in 1869 at the University of Virginia, is the largest college social fraternity in the world, with more than 200,000 living members, including over 17,000 undergraduates and more than 300 chapters and colonies across the United States and Canada. The organization’s international headquarters is based in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In addition to building and maintaining Fisher Houses, the Fisher House Foundation operates several related programs, including Hero Miles, which uses donated frequent-flyer miles to reunite families with injured service members, and Hotels for Heroes, which provides free hotel stays near medical centers using donated hotel points. The Foundation also administers grants and scholarships benefiting military children, spouses, and the families of fallen or disabled veterans.
The Morehead Optimist Club operates Cave Run Bingo, with all proceeds benefiting youth programs throughout the community.
