A record-breaking Mega Millions jackpot may have been won in Georgia, but New York came out ahead in its own way—collecting more than $54 million for public schools and local retailers during the months-long prize buildup.
Between July 1 and November 14, New Yorkers spent $132.8 million on Mega Millions tickets, fueling a historic 40-drawing jackpot run that peaked at $980 million.
The result? $46.5 million in Lottery profits sent directly to New York’s K–12 public schools, and nearly $8 million in commissions paid to Lottery retailers statewide.
“New Yorkers continue to win big when massive jackpots generate excitement across the state,” said Gaming Commission Chair Brian O’Dwyer. “The best part is that our public schools reap the benefits of every ticket sold.”
While the jackpot itself went to a lucky player in Georgia, multiple New Yorkers scored prizes of $20,000 or more during the run—totaling $8.8 million in winnings. Highlights include:
