NEW ULM — Martin Luther College’s Brady Turriff’s final pass of the day was caught by Thomas Koelpin, but Koelpin landed out of bounds, negating what would have been a game-tying touchdown against University of Northwestern as the Knights fell 24-17 in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference football game on Saturday.
MLC came back from a 17-7 deficit to tie it at 17, but UNW scored one final touchdown with 2:24 to play to hold off the Knights comeback.
Turriff went 22 for 40 on the day with 271 yards, while Aurthur Robinson rushed for 74 yards and two scores. Ben Vasold caught eight passes for 137 yards, with Koelpin adding 65 yards on five receptions. Defensively, Ethan Melso had nine total tackles, while Jerimiah Stanton and Carson Burow each had seven tackles. Deiondre Parks added a sack.
The teams traded punts for the first two drives, but a 38-yard completion from Turriff to Vasold set up Robinson for a 1-yard touchdown run to put the Knights up 7-0. The teams exchanged punts again before a pair of roughing the passer penalties helped UNW get into the red zone, where Keaton Sargent finished off the drive with a 4-yard rush to tie the game.
Two more drives ended with punts as the game entered the second quarter, but as MLC entered UNW territory, a Robinson fumble gave the Eagles possession. UNW marched down to the MLC 6-yard line, where the Eagles kicked a field goal to take a 10-7 lead that they took into halftime.
UNW went three-and-out on the opening drive of the second half, but another Robinson fumble gave the ball back to the Eagles. Once again UNW capitalized, with Basil Demco completing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Braeden Little to give the Eagles a 17-7 lead.
MLC got back on the board in the fourth quarter as Robinson finished off an 8-play, 66-yard drive with a 17-yard touchdown rush to cut the lead to 17-14. The Knights turned UNW over on downs on the next drive, and MLC was able to get into field goal range for Micah Koschnitzke to tie it on a 24-yard field goal.
UNW responded with a 5-play, 73-yard drive that ended in a 13-yard touchdown rush from Demco as the Eagles took a 24-17 lead with 2:18 to play. Turriff completed a 20-yard pass to Koelpin, then a 14-yard pass to Koelpin to take the Knights to the UNW 12-yard line. However, four consecutive incomplete passes ended the drive with a turnover on downs, and the Eagles were able to kneel the clock out for the win.
