During halftime at the Florida Classic between HBCUs, Florida A&M University (FAMU) and Bethune-Cookman University, representatives from the Florida Lottery presented the schools with an on-field check presentation to highlight the lottery’s support of higher education throughout the Sunshine State.  
Representatives from the state lottery took to the field to highlight how the lottery has impacted students attending both institutions. Lottery leaders said the agency has contributed more than $76 million to FAMU and B-CU combined through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program, according to WFTV.
“We are honored to stand alongside institutions like FAMU and B-CU, and we remain proud to contribute to education across the entire state of Florida,” said Florida Lottery Secretary John F. Davis.
Davis is currently the secretary of the Florida Lottery and the incoming athletic director for FAMU. According to the Tallahassee Democrat, he will start his new role on Jan. 5.  Florida Governor Ron DeSantis appointed Davis in October 2020.  As he prepares for his new role at FAMU, the community has criticized the move. He is the latest executive from the DeSantis administration to lead FAMU.
In May 2025, Marva Johnson was selected as the new president of FAMU. The decision generated controversy due to her political ties with DeSantis, who is hellbent on reducing DEI programs and scaling back the teaching of Black history. DeSantis signed the “Stop WOKE Act” in 2022, restricting schools and businesses from promoting certain concepts about race, gender, racism, social privilege, and more.
The Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program, funded by the state of Florida, provides scholarships based on high school academic achievement for postsecondary education in Florida. The program offers different award levels, each with its own eligibility criteria and award amounts.
The Florida Academic Scholars (FAS) award covers 100% of tuition and fees, and the Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS) award covers 75%. In addition to GPA requirements, high school seniors must submit test scores and complete a community service work-hour requirement.
“Together with the Florida Department of Education (FDOE), the Florida Lottery has helped over 1 million scholars and counting receive a postsecondary education through the Bright Futures Scholarship program,” a statement on the program website reads.
When officials presented the check during the Florida Classic, state lottery leaders said they have donated over $76 million to universities statewide so far this year.

​The Powerball jackpot has increased again and is now at a huge $719 million. Even though nobody won the jackpot in the latest draw, one player in Southern California still had a very lucky day and took home a big amount of money.
For the Nov. 26 draw, a ticket sold in Southern California matched all five white numbers but missed the red Powerball. The winning numbers were 7, 8, 15, 19 and 28, and the Powerball was 3. Because the player missed the Powerball number, they did not win the full jackpot of $681 million. However, the person still won $979,462.
Lottery officials stated that the ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven gas station in Mission Viejo, approximately 50 miles from Los Angeles. People in the area were excited because wins like this do not happen often.
Across the country, there were also four other “Match 5” winners, and each of them won $1 million. These tickets were sold in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. Although the jackpot was not won, many players walked away with substantial prizes.

Two bets around $3 ended in major prizes for casino players at Encore Boston Harbor this month.
One of the bet’s was for exactly $3 on the game “Ultimate Fire Link.” The prize, which was won on Nov. 8, was worth $19,555.67. The other bet made on the same day was for $3.80 on the game “Flaming Hot Pots Mrs. Wong.” That prize was worth $26,314.56.
The casino, which is located in Everett, has more than 2,700 slot machines and more than 175 table games.
Players must be 21 years or older.
Encore Boston Harbor set a new record for jackpot payouts in August, distributing more than $46.3 million to lucky winners across its gaming floor.
The casino paid out $46,395,287.66 across 16,628 total jackpots during the month, marking the highest payout total in the venue’s history. The vast majority came from slot machine wins, with 16,490 slot jackpots totaling over $45.3 million.
Table games contributed 135 jackpots worth approximately $1 million, while sports betting accounted for three jackpots totaling $15,296.53.
The single largest winner in August hit a $134,778.50 jackpot from a $225 bet on a slot machine called “Huff n More Puff” on August 2.
The record August figures represented a significant increase from July, when the casino paid out $39,627,206.20 across 15,101 jackpots. There was a lot of frenzy over Mega Millions recently as the jackpot neared $1 billion. The huge prize was finally won just before Thanksgiving 2025 after many drawings yielded no winner. 
The winning ticket, valued at $980 million, was purchased from a Publix grocery store in Georgia. At the end of final ticket sales, it reached a jackpot of $983 million. 
That winning ticket matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball in the Friday, Nov. 14, 2025 drawing, which made it the eighth-largest Mega Millions jackpot ever. Since there was only one winning ticket, people everywhere started wondering which Publix store sold it. 
Mega Millions went back to a starting jackpot of $50 million on Nov. 18. The next drawing rolled over, meaning the jackpot began to grow again. But even with the reset, most of the attention stayed on the Publix winner because holiday jackpots always create extra excitement. 
Big wins around the holidays are not new: In December 2024, someone in California won a $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot. If the Nov. 14 jackpot had rolled over, it would have been the second billion-dollar jackpot of 2025 and the 14th billion-dollar jackpot ever in Powerball or Mega Millions history. Now that a winner has been found, all focus is on this $980 million Publix ticket.
