Crenshaw rises again in football but without coach Robert Garrett – Los Angeles Times

The official head coach for Crenshaw High’s football team remains Robert Garrett even though he’s been barred from attending games on Los Angeles Unified School District property since Aug. 21, when he was placed on administrative leave.
His long-time assistant and Crenshaw grad, Terrence Whitehead, took over as interim coach the week before the opening game. He and assistants trained by Garrett since they were adolescents have the Cougars at 10-1 and playing for the City Section Open Division title against top-seeded Carson at 6 p.m. Saturday at L.A. Southwest College.
“I think he’s doing an outstanding job from where he’s been put,” Garrett said.
Garrett said it’s no surprise what Crenshaw has accomplished with 14 of 18 players returning from a team last season that lost by a single point in the opening round of the Division I playoffs to No. 1-seeded Eagle Rock. Add standout linebacker De’Andre Kirkpatrick to that group along with others and you have Crenshaw seeking its seventh City title.
“My thoughts are you win ballgames from January through July when you meet daily and go over fundamentals, skills and get bigger, stronger and faster. You win it in the weight room,” Garrett said.
Garrett said he has spoken to Whitehead weekly and seen games that were streamed. But he has no intention of attending Saturday’s game.
“I’ll be sitting in front of a TV watching USC versus UCLA,” he said.
Garrett praised Kirkpatrick, a transfer from eight-man power Animo Robinson who he met last spring and summer.
“He’s by far a Division I player,” he said of the 6-foot-3, 225-pound junior. “You can’t coach size. He has good attitude. Doesn’t cuss, doesn’t fuss and doesn’t hang out. It doesn’t come from me or anyone coaching him. All we can do is motivate him and encourage him to do better.”
To say Garrett is fed up with LAUSD is an understatement. There has been no celebration of the greatest achievement by a football coach in City Section history. Crenshaw’s 10 wins give him 300 career victories since 1988, which puts him in Hall of Fame territory.
“I’m going to coach somewhere, somehow,” he said. “I was born to coach. I’m a helluva coach. Nobody gave me that and nobody can take it away.”
Garrett said he has never been told what is being investigated the last four months.
“I’m going to coach again. I’m going to get out of the house real soon because I’m an American citizen,” he said.
He continues to receive full pay while staying home and waiting to be cleared. Once LAUSD starts an investigation, it can last more than a year. Former Huntington Park basketball coach Joe Reed returned this year after 14 months on administrative leave after a parental complaint.
“I haven’t been told anything,” Garrett said. “All I’ve been told is we’re investigating. It doesn’t matter what happens because whatever they tell me what they are investigating, they will find no wrongdoing whatsoever.”
Garrett is writing a book. He said he was the first from his Jefferson High graduating class of 1977 to earn a college degree. His mother was one of 18 siblings and each one had six or more kids. He graduated from Nebraska’s Concordia University in 1981 with a focus on teaching and has a Lutheran teaching certificate. He could be a pastor if he wanted to.
“I’m not a coach, I’m an educator,” he said. “I’m the first in my family to get a college degree. You don’t know what I’ve been through and what I’ve seen.”
He offered words of wisdom for Thanksgiving: “Always do thy duty, which is best, leave unto the Lord the rest.”

Boston woman wins final $2.5M grand prize in this $10 holiday lottery game – MassLive.com
The final $2.5 million grand prize remaining in a holiday-themed scratch ticket game released last year was recently claimed.
Celene Chen, of Boston, won the $2.5 million prize from a “$2,500,000 Merry & Bright” scratch ticket. The game costs $10 per ticket to play and was released in October 2024.
This was the third and final $2.5 million prize remaining to be claimed in the game. One $1 million prize remains to be claimed as of late November.
Chen came forward on Nov. 10 to claim her prize and chose the cash option to receive over $1.6 million, before taxes. She plans to buy a house with her winnings.
Chen bought her winning ticket in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Boston, at Players Cafe located at 950 Hyde Park Ave. The store will receive a $25,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

That’s how much a 66-year-old Townsend woman earned after claiming a top prize in Delaware Lottery’s Win Big Instant Game.
The retired Delaware native has been playing for about 10 years, enjoying both draw and instant games “for fun and to win,” according to a news release from the Delaware Lottery.
The woman, who chose to remain anonymous, typically purchases about five tickets at a time, preferring newer games with larger prize opportunities, officials said.
Officials said she tripled checked her ticket to be sure she she won since this was her biggest lottery win yet.
She plans to use her winnings for savings and to help pay down bills, saying the prize will make things “a lot more comfortable” for her and her spouse in retirement, officials said.
“It’s wonderful to see a longtime player take home a prize that will make a real difference in her life,” said Helene Keeley, Delaware Lottery director. “We’re thrilled for her and wish her all the best as she enjoys this big win in her retirement.”
The woman purchased her winning ticket at the Wawa at 5632 DuPont Parkway in Smyrna. She claimed her prize at Lottery Headquarters on Oct. 27.
The $30 Win Big Instant Game offers players the chance to win prizes up to $300,000 instantly, according to the Delaware Lottery. There are still two top prizes of $300,000 available for Win Big and three $300,000 top prizes in the other $30 game, Cash King.
Tickets are available statewide at these Delaware Lottery retailers.
Tickets are valid for up to one year past the drawing date for drawing game prizes or within one year of the announced end of sales for Instant Games, according to delottery.com.
First things first, sign the back of your ticket using an ink pen to identify yourself as the ticket owner. According to the Delaware lottery, once signed, ticket ownership cannot be changed or transferred.
For prizes $599 or less, tickets can be redeemed at Delaware lottery retailers or the Delaware Lottery Office. You can also mail your tickets to the Delaware Lottery Office: 1575 McKee Road, Suite 102, Dover, DE 19904.
Prizes worth $2,500 or less can be claimed at select Delaware Lottery retailer claim centers throughout Kent, Sussex and New Castle counties.
Any prize between $600 and $5,000 can be claimed between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday to Friday at these redemption centers:
A prize worth $5,001 or more can be claimed at the Delaware Lottery Office on business days from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. You must bring a photo ID that includes your name and address, as well as a Social Security card.
All winning Powerball, Mega Millions and Lotto America tickets must be redeemed in the state and jurisdiction where they were sold.

Solana ETFs have now logged net inflows for 20 straight trading days, an unbroken run since their late-October debut. Data provider SoSoValue put Monday’s net additions at US$58 million (AU$88.74 million), the third-strongest day so far and the largest since Nov. 3.
Bitwise’s BSOL ETF accounted for most of that with US$39.5 million (AU$60.44 million) in net buying, while Fidelity’s fund added US$9.7 million (AU$14.84 million), and products from Grayscale and VanEck saw inflows of US$4.7 million (AU$7.19 million) and US$3.1 million (AU$4.74 million).
BSOL launched on Oct. 28, debuting with a trading volume of around US$56 million (AU$85 million). Two days later, it added around US$72 million (AU$110 million). That’s more than nearly 850 ETFs this year.
Overall, the six US spot Solana ETFs have accumulated US$568.24 million (AU$869.41 million) of net inflows and now manage US$843.81 million (AU$1,291.03 million) in total, roughly 1.09% of SOL’s market value.

XRP products also saw strong demand, as all spot XRP ETFs received US$164 million (AU$250.92 million) on Monday, their second-biggest daily intake after the US$243 million (AU$371.79 million) record set on Nov. 14.
XRP ETFs run by Grayscale and Franklin Templeton each drew more than US$60 million (AU$91.80 million), and some additional inflows by Canary and Bitwise, per SoSo Value data.

There were also 20 5th-place winning tickets sold in New York State. Those tickets matched three out of five numbers and also had the Mega Ball number. Those tickets won between $400 and $1000 each based on each ticket's built-in Megaplier.
Here were last night's winning numbers: 11-15-31-32-59 with a Mega Ball number of 18.
There were no grand prize-winning tickets sold from last night's drawing. Since no one won, the jackpot for the next drawing on Friday night is now up to $80 million dollars.
