Raleigh teacher will use $1 million lottery win for his retirement – NC Education Lottery

Robert Vandenberg of Raleigh will have a more comfortable retirement after a second-chance drawing delivered him a $1 million top prize.
“This couldn’t have come at a more perfect time,” Vandenberg said.
Vandenberg, a kindergarten teacher, found out he won his prize in the first of four $8 Million Money Maker Second Chance drawings when he got a notification from the lottery. There were 979,465 total entries in the drawing.
“It was a big wow,” recalled Vandenberg, who has been teaching for over 30 years. “It was really cool.”
When Vandenberg arrived at lottery headquarters Tuesday, he had a decision to make. He could choose to receive his prize as an annuity of $50,000 over 20 years or a lump sum of $600,000. He chose the lump sum of $600,000 and, after required tax withholdings, took home $430,500.
“We are ecstatic about this,” he said.
Players get a second chance with their $8 Million Money Maker scratch-offs by scanning them into their lottery accounts where they are automatically entered into the drawing. The drawing had one top prize of $1 million, three $100,000 prizes, 10 $25,000 winners and 50 winners of $500.

LOL…can’t make this stuff up. Glad and happy for Robert, BUT…yet another $100k+ win in Wake County. Those of us watching the details know just how much NCEL’s “random winner” algorithm is clearly flawed.

EuroMillions £83m jackpot finally claimed after 13 days – BBC

A EuroMillions jackpot of more than £83.4m has been claimed after 13 days without the winner making themselves known, operator Allwyn has confirmed.
The ticket for the prize draw on 24 January worth £83,474,081.80 was purchased in the UK.
The prize winner matched all five main numbers – 02, 11, 19, 30 and 49 – as well as the Lucky Star numbers, which were 03 and 08.
Andy Carter, senior winners' adviser at National Lottery operator Allwyn, said it was "absolutely incredible news" that someone had come forward. Their claim needs to be verified before they receive a payout.
"Everyone dreams of that huge win when they buy their EuroMillions ticket – and for this lucky ticket-holder this dream has become a reality," he said, adding: "Imagine all the possibilities that are now within their grasp."
Once the EuroMillions ticket has been validated and paid, the ticket-holder will then decide whether they wish to disclose their identity.
Unless they decide to go public, there will be no information on where the ticket was purchased, nor whether they were an individual or syndicate winner, Allwyn said.
The National Lottery said the jackpot was number 23 on their list of the "most spectacular" wins – ie the largest – of all time.
In July 2022, an anonymous UK ticket-holder scooped the record EuroMillions jackpot of £195m.
That same year, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, won a then record-breaking £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on 10 May.
The UK's third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder claimed the £177m jackpot in the draw in November last year.
According to the National Lottery, there are still nine EuroMillions prizes yet to be claimed by UK ticket-holders, with the largest standing at £1m.
Ticket-holders have 180 days from the day of the draw to claim their prize.
The Stroud church is on Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register and in need of restoration.
Peter Rogers couldn't believe he had won and double checked the ticket at multiple shops.
The Northamptonshire-based group will use it to deliver cultural projects in the next three years.
The Friends of Walpole Old Chapel says the money will help safeguard the building's future.
The jackpot-winning lottery ticket was for the Saturday 24 May draw and it was bought in Birmingham.

The record £209m prize was scooped by an Austrian winner after the winning numbers were announced on Friday
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
UK Euromillons ticket holders have missed out on a record £209m jackpot as the prize was scooped by a European punter.
The competition’s biggest-ever payout was won by an Austrian participant after the winning number’s were revealed as 10, 21, 30, 42 and 45.
The Euromillions jackpot has been won a total of 19 times by Austrian winners since the launch of the competition, according to Austria’s lottery operator.
No-one won the £182 million EuroMillions jackpot on Tuesday, meaning the top prize rolled over into Friday’s draw.
The lucky winner topped the last record prize of £195m, which was claimed by an anonymous player on 19 July 2022.
Two months earlier, Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, won a then-record-breaking £184m with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on 10 May 2022.
The UK’s third biggest win came after an anonymous ticket-holder scooped the £177 million jackpot in the draw on 26 November last year.
Mr Thwaite woke up early to an email telling him he had won. “I looked it up and saw we’d won. I saw how much and I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t go back to sleep,” he said.
“I didn’t want to wake Jess up so I just laid there for what seemed like forever. I spent some time searching for property with no budget limit, which was a novelty!”
Ms Thwaite was in disbelief when she heard the news, insisting either her husband had made a mistake or The National Lottery was wrong.
Trying not to get her hopes up she continued her normal morning routine until they were able to confirm the win with Camelot.
She said at the time: “The win gives us time to dream, which we haven’t had before. We’ve had one week to think about this and we now have time to share lots of experiences and go on adventures with our family and friends.
“Our two children have always talked about going to Hawaii, I’ve no idea why, but we can now make that dream come true.
“They have always wanted a horse box for our ponies rather than the run-down trailer we use. Just to see their faces when we can make these things come true will be worth every penny.”

New Jersey couple wins $3 million on scratch-off ticket, after winning $1 million in April – Bergen Record

Maybe lightning can strike in the same place twice.
A lucky Ocean County couple just won $3 million on a scratch-off ticket after already winning $1 million on a scratch-off back on April 1. No fooling!
The New Jersey Lottery announced that a NJ couple with two children and a third on the way beat the two million to one odds to win the grand prize in the rewly-released Jackpot Millions game on Nov. 13. The couple purchased the $30 ticket at the Fischer Bay Exxon on Fischer Boulevard in Toms River.
On April 1, the couple won a $1 million top prize in the $1,000,000 Ultimate Spectacular scratch-off game. That $30 ticket was also bought in Ocean County. The odds to win the top prize in that game was one million to one.
The NJ Lottery estimated the combined odds of winning both top prizes is in about one in two trillion.
“I’ve always said that you only need one ticket to win big,” New Jersey Lottery Director James Carey said. “But I guess, in this case two tickets certainly didn’t hurt! This is just pure blind luck.”
The couple have a 5-year-old and an 11-month-old told lottery officials that make a competition out of lottery tickets.
“With our kids, we can’t really get out of the house,” the husband said. “So at the beginning of the month, we get some [scratch-off] tickets. When the kids go to bed, we scratch a few off. We like to make it a bit of a competition–who can win the most. It seems we at least always break even.”
The husband scratched a ticket and thought he might won a prize and handed it to his wife.
“I looked at it, held it to my chest and screamed,” she said of the $3 million win.
“Ten seconds later, she’s laughing. This is perfect,” the husband said before telling his wife: “Babe, we got luck on our side.”
After winning $1 million six month earlier, the wife told lottery officials that “maybe we celebrated a bit too much” as she patted her belly. The wife i five months pregnant.
