The November 1st Food Drive was outstanding — 990 pounds of food were collected for the Northern Stokes Food Pantry, possibly a record! Four Ruritans and guest Patty Best Anders participated.
The Halloween Trunk or Treat, co-hosted by the Ruritans and the Fire Department, was a huge success with 240 children attending. Thank you to everyone who volunteered, set up displays and donated candy.
On Saturday, November 1st, Ruritan members collected 10 bags of trash along the road from the community building to Delta Church. Six members and guest Lisa Tutterow took part — great job keeping our community clean; thank you!
Northern Stokes Food, Fun & Friends is back with its Fall/Winter Schedule! Mark your calendars for November 18th, and December 2nd and 16th. All gatherings will be held at Lawsonville Community Center, located at 4589 NC, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Come out and enjoy free dinner, fellowship, and activities in a caring environment that encourages our youth to grow morally, socially, and spiritually. Sandy Ridge Ruritans & The NE Stokes Volunteer Fire Department Stuff the Truck Toy Drive is underway and will continue for the entire month of November. Unopened toys will be accepted to help fill a fire truck! Oak Ridge Baptist Church will then distribute to kids in our area who need a gift for Christmas. Items needed are new, unwrapped toys for children 0 — 17, new clothes, all sizes and new shoes in various sizes for kids. If you wish to donate, you may stop by the fire department Mon — Fri from 9 am to 5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 12 noon. If no one is at the fire department, you may drop off at Red Top Café.
On Dec. 6, a Benefit Bingo will be held at the American Legion (located at 1308 Amostown Road) for Darlinda Finch, sister of Ruritan member Andrea Finch. Darlinda’s only kidney has failed, and she is currently on the Duke Medial transplant list. Doors open at 5 and Bingo starts at 6. Please come out to show your support.

Episode 1: November 14, Episode 2: November 21, Episode 3: December 5 and Episode 4: December 12. The series airs on Lifetime at 7:30 p.m. and features the Linn family’s home renovation in Hampton, New Jersey. Congratulations, Joshua, on representing our community and our veterans.

TRIED AND TASTED RECIPE:
Classic Thanksgiving Turkey Dressing
1 large pan of cornbread (about 8 cups crumbled)
6 slices day-old white bread, torn into small pieces
1 stick unsalted butter
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 — 3 stalks celery, finely chopped
2 — 3 eggs, lightly beaten
3 — 4 cups chicken or turkey broth
1 1/2 tsp. salt and 1 tsp. black pepper
1 tbsp. poultry seasoning
Preheat oven to 375 degrees and lightly butter a 9 x 13” dish. Combine breads in large mixing bowl and set aside. Melt butter and sauté onion and celery about 8 — 10 minutes. Add to bread mixture. Stir in seasonings. Pour in beaten eggs and 3 cups broth. Stir gently until well combined. Add more broth if needed. Texture should be moist but not soupy. Pour into dish and bake for 45 — 55 minutes or until golden brown and set in the center. For extra flavor mix in a cup of shredded turkey or sausage before baking.

If you feel lucky about the Nov. 14 Mega Millions drawing, you may need to stop by Kroger for a special promotion.
The Kentucky Lottery will give away $5 Mega Millions coupons to Louisville shoppers for the $965 million jackpot drawing beginning at 1 p.m. at the Kroger location at 5000 Mud Lane.
Terry Sebastian, a spokesperson for the Kentucky Lottery Commission, said people may begin to line up as early as 30 minutes before the event. In September, the commission hosted a similar event at a local Publix for the $1.8 billion Powerball jackpot.
Kentucky Lottery CEO and President Mary Harville will be available during the giveaway. Sebastian said he expects around 500 people to attend.
“It’s most interesting to see shoppers who had no idea about the giveaway,” he said.
The commission will be giving out T-shirts and other goodies during the event. Coupons will be available while supplies last.

Tonight’s EuroMillions jackpot is currently at an estimated £210 million – the largest lottery prize the UK has ever seen. Last Friday’s draw saw no winners, so if someone were to win, they would instantly break the record of scooping the National Lottery’s biggest win.
The jackpot tonight – Tuesday, June 10 – is now capped but for those hoping to bag a win themselves, it is believed that there might be a way to increase those chances.

The EuroMillions draw takes place Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday tends to be a less popular day for buying a lottery ticket compared to Friday, as most people have other things to focus on during the week. So, if you’re planning on entering, then it is believed that today might just be the day to grab that ticket.
However, lottery officials say that the number of people entering the draw doesn’t impact the likelihood of winning. A Lottery spokesperson said: “The odds of winning the jackpot in any EuroMillions draw are the same because they are the odds of matching the seven numbers you choose.”
The National Lottery, which is involved in running the EuroMillions, has also highlighted that as the jackpot amount rises, the number of tickets purchased on both Tuesday and Friday is likely to be similar. It is reported that up to a staggering 100 million tickets are bought every week.
June is a lucky month for buying tickets, according to the National Lottery.
In the last 15 years, the month saw four winners taking the top 20 prize winnings. In 2023, an individual bagged £111.7million, two years prior, another person won nearly £111.5 million, 2019 saw someone pick up £123.5 million, and in 2015 a winner earned £93.4 million.
So purchasing a ticket this month could add to your chances.

People also swear by doing it the old-fashioned way by buying it a ticket at your local shop or post office rather than online. EuroMillions tickets can be bought on the National Lottery website for £2.50 where a player can pick their numbers or have them randomly generated as part of a Lucky Dip.
However the National Lottery claims that where you purchase a ticket has no affect on your winning chance. A spokeperson said: “Anybody has a chance of winning – the one essential is you have a ticket. Research has show it is a 50/50 split for big winners between retail and online tickets.”
Many lottery enthusiats take the time to investigate what numbers have been drawn the least in the hopes of increasing their chances of bagging a prize with ‘rare’ numbers. According to lottery.co.uk, the least drawn EuroMillions numbers are 22 and 40. It also says the most overdue balls are 26, 11 and 16.
Unfortunately, selecting the rare numbers in reality will not do anything as the odds of winning a draw is an independent event. The spokeperson said: “In theory the same numbers could come up in every single draw repeatedly. That is just as statistically probable as any other set of five main numbers and two lucky star numbers appearing.”
In 2009, the Bulgarian Lottery saw the same set of numbers – 4, 15, 23, 24, 35 and 42, drawn back to back. However, officials ruled it a coincidence.
The odds of winning any prize on EuroMillions are 13 to 1, with the game guaranteeing a UK player to win £1million in every draw. This means that whether you want to test out the so-called ways to increase your chances or you’d prefer to just go for it, there are still “lots of prizes up for grabs”.

The Mega Millions jackpot has skyrocketed to almost $965 million after no lottery players matched all six of the winning numbers in Tuesday night’s drawing.
The next drawing is Friday, Nov. 14, with an estimated jackpot a staggering $965 million, the eighth-largest jackpot since the game started in 2002, according to Mega Millions. 
Tuesday night’s winning jackpot numbers were white balls 10, 13, 40, 42 and 46, plus the gold Mega Ball 1.
Mega Millions tickets are sold in 45 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. 
The tickets are $5 each and include a randomly assigned multiplier, multiplying the base prize levels by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X. 
Mega Millions explains on its website that half of the proceeds from the sale of each Mega Millions ticket remains in the state where the ticket was sold, where the money supports designated worthy causes and retailer commissions. Mega Millions drawings are held at 11 p.m. ET on Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Powerball jackpot has reached $546 million after there were no winners in Wednesday night’s drawing.
The next drawing is on Saturday, Nov. 15 with an estimated jackpot of $546 million.  Powerball holds the world record for largest national lottery jackpot at $2.04 billion. The record prize was won by a single ticket in California on Nov. 7, 2022.
Wednesday night’s winning jackpot numbers were 29, 39, 43, 51, 65, and Powerball 23.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. Players select five numbers between 1 and 69 for the white balls, then select one number between 1 and 26 for the red Powerball.
Powerball tickets cost $2 per game. In Idaho and Montana, Powerball is bundled with Power Play for a minimum purchase price of $3 per play.
Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET!
Powerball says all profits from ticket purchases are retained by the individual lotteries and used to fund projects approved by the legislature authorizing each lottery.
