The N.C. Education Lottery just relaunched its Play Smart™ to provide enhanced tips and tools to help North Carolinians play lottery games the way smart players play.
The new platform, shared today at a meeting of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, can be found at NCPlaySmart.com. It includes:
• Tips and tools on playing the lottery.
• Gamified player education messages.
• Engaging educational video content.
“More people than ever before in North Carolina are playing lottery games,” said Mark Michalko, chief executive officer and executive director of the lottery. “As more people play our games, we made sure we invested more in our player education and responsible gaming programs. The new Play Smart program helps our players take advantage of every opportunity to make winning decisions that keeps their play fun and healthy.”
Play Smart began in 2020 as a player-focused responsible gaming program centered on education of lottery players. Input from lottery players and stakeholders helped create the stronger and more engaging program.
“Most people who play the lottery play responsibly,” said Michalko. “Our new Play Smart program still offers information about how to get help if playing the lottery stops being fun. The big shift here comes with sharing tips and tools in an engaging way that applies to everyone playing lottery games that, if used, will ensure play stays fun.”
Three new Play Smart videos are available 24/7 on the website. They include:
• “Draw Games. Get to know ‘em.” Dispels myths about draw games, including the myth of “hot numbers,” and provides information about odds and random results.
• “Scratch-off games. Make heads and tails of it all.” Explains how odds change from one scratch-off game to the other, how to get information on prizes remaining in each game, and how to check if you won a prize.
• “It’s good to have limits!” Shares tips on setting limits, having a budget for lottery play, avoiding chasing losses, and warning signs to heed to avoid playing too much.
In addition to the website, the lottery conducts statewide advertising, marketing and communications campaigns to raise awareness of the Play Smart program’s tips and tools. It just completed one four-week campaign in August, plans additional social media and digital support in October, and will conduct a new statewide campaign in March. New Play Smart brochures have been distributed to more than 7,100 retail locations where lottery tickets are sold.

A 24-hour bingo and slots hall has sparked frustration among Shepherd’s Bush residents after becoming the ninth gambling venue in the area.
Shipley’s Bingo and Slots opened in September in the west London suburb, which was named by the Metropolitan Police as an anti-social behaviour hotspot.
Residents are campaigning for the closure of such venues through groups like Fix Uxbridge Road W12, which focuses on community issues.
Katta Kost, a Shepherd’s Bush resident and member of the group, said: “It is really not fair on the people.
“The local council is promoting a nightlife economy, but it’s a nightlife economy that is not suitable to the residents who live in the area.”

This group are campaigning for the venue to be shut down or for the hours to be significantly reduced, arguing that there is no need for it – especially with a Merkur Slots being opposite on the other side of the green. 
Additionally, nearly 30% of the borough’s gambling venues are on Uxbridge Road. 
The group’s petition to take urgent action to clean up and restore Shepherd’s Bush got 2,915 signatures, the highest in Hammersmith and Fulham’s history, and led to a cabinet hearing in September.
When questioned about action against the venue, Hammersmith and Fulham Councillor Stephen Cowen said: “We don’t legally have the ability to close them [gambling shops].
“If we could close these things down, we would.” 
Kost believes, however, that action against these places could have been taken before the licencing permission was given. 
“There’s no real thought or concern for residents or the nature or the identity of the high street that is going into the council’s decisions,” she said.
Support for the closure of such places has been wide-spread across the borough.
Founder of another residents group, Friends of Shepherd’s Bush Green, Jonathan Pearl said: “It is a very sad indictment of our society that we even need to have places like that. 
“There are plenty of places to gamble online and there are plenty of betting shops on the green.
“Is there really any need for such a massive 24-hour facility for people to ruin their own lives?”
These groups are calling on supporters to contact their council and the Gambling Commission to make change in their area.

CINCINNATI (WKRC) – A Kentucky man has struck gold again, claiming his second Kentucky Lottery Instant Play win in just five months. This time, Braxton Skaggs of Campbellsville, Ky., won nearly $58,000, adding to his previous $30,000 win in May.
Skaggs had taken a break from playing after his initial win on Triple Platinum, but his mother's recent $3,000 online win reignited his interest. "He got on two or three days later," his mom said, per a Kentucky Lottery media release. "I kept telling him it was going to hit."
While packing for a family vacation, Skaggs decided to try his luck again. "I just got off from work and was just wasting time and decided to jump on," he told lottery officials. With only $150 left in his account, Skaggs wagered $5 on the Bluegrass Bucks Hot Hit Jackpots Instant Play game and hit the $57,947.26 progressive jackpot. After taxes, he took home $41,722.03.
His mother recalled the moment he shared the news: "I was sitting at the table, and he comes running in. 'Mom, mom, you’re not going to believe this, I hit the big one again.'"
With his winnings, Skaggs is now closer to achieving his dream of building a house. "We’re getting ready to start pouring the foundation next week," he said as he left Kentucky Lottery headquarters.

A third-prize Powerball ticket worth $50,000 was recently sold in New York City, according to lottery officials.
The New York Lottery announced the winning ticket for the Nov. 13 drawing matched four white balls and the red Powerball. It was sold at 72 Lucky Lotto, located at 7201 Third Ave. in Brooklyn.
The winning numbers for that evening were: 9, 20, 26, 43, 58, and Powerball 9.
The winning numbers for the Powerball game are drawn from a field of one to 69. The Powerball number is drawn from a separate field of one to 26. In order to win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball number.
Powerball tickets can be purchased at any New York Lottery retailer for $2, seven days a week. The deadline for purchasing a ticket is 10 p.m. on draw nights.
Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m., and the New York Lottery urges players to buy tickets early to avoid last-minute lines.
