Magic searches for winning process, welcomes Blazers – CBS Sports

If not listed, please contact your TV provider.
With each team looking to flush disappointing losses, the Orlando Magic host the Portland Trail Blazers in interconference play on Monday.
After Franz Wagner powered Orlando to a 13-point victory over Boston on Friday, the Magic fell 111-107 to the Celtics on Sunday. Orlando has dropped six of nine since winning its season opener.
“I like to think we stay with our process regardless of the results,” Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley said. “We don’t want to go with the highs and lows. The team understands that things happen when guys are in the right spots, when we push the pace, the stops that we need in order to get out and run. Those are process pieces and that’s what we’re continuing to do.”
Paced by Paolo Banchero’s 22.8 scoring average through 10 games, Orlando will need to see the production from its star player continue in the team’s third game in four nights.
“You can’t say enough about him and his ability to create for others,” Mosley said of Banchero, who scored 28 points on Sunday. “The draw he has every night, with guys coming at him, there are three guys coming at him each time he touches the basketball. He’s making the right play, trying to find the right read, trying to find guys spaced out to knock shots down.”
Wagner adds 22.3 ppg, followed by Desmond Bane’s 14.2.
Portland has dropped two of three, falling 136-131 at the Miami Heat in its first of a five-game road trip. The Trail Blazers have gone 5-3 since head coach Chauncey Billups was placed on leave as part of an investigation into illegal gambling on Oct. 23.
Portland forward Deni Avdija has enjoyed life under interim head coach Tiago Splitter, as the 24-year-old is averaging a team-high 25.3 points along with seven rebounds and 4.9 assists per game through nine contests.
Avdija has posted consecutive double-doubles, just missing out on his third career triple-double on Saturday, going for 33 points, 11 rebounds and eight dimes against the Heat. He had 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in a 121-119 home win over the defending league champion Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.
“I’m just trying to box out and help the guys create stops,” Avdija said of his recent rebounding surge. “At the end of the day, if the ball lands in my hands or somebody else’s, it doesn’t matter. We get the stop, get the rebound and go the other way.”
Portland, which has won 13 of 17 over Orlando since February 2017, will put an emphasis on avoiding falling behind early. Splitter’s group has trailed at halftime in three of its last four games.
“We need to start the games better,” Splitter said. “I think lately we’ve had to get punched in the face first and then wake up and start to play in the second half. That’s not enough. This league is too tough to wait for that. Hopefully, from the get-go, we are ready to play the way we want.”
Behind Avdija’s team-leading scoring clip, forward Jerami Grant has chipped in 20 points per game off the bench, while starting guard Shaedon Sharpe averages 18.4.

Bears May Have Hit the Jackpot with CJ Gardner-Johnson Gamble – Da Windy City

The Chicago Bears have dealt with injury issues in the secondary throughout the 2025 campaign, and that led the front office to sign veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson in late October. While he has only been part of the defense in the Windy City for two games, the decision to add the veteran to the roster looks like a fantastic decision based on the early returns.
To find a player with the experience that Gardner-Johnson possesses on the free agent market in the middle of the season is not something that happens every season. His successful addition to the defense also prevented general manager Ryan Poles and the front office from having to seek out a different player to join the secondary via trade, which would have cost the Bears far more than the $1.1 million Gardner-Johnson signed for last month.
The veteran defender shined again in Sunday's win over the New York Giants, finishing with seven solo tackles, two lost yardage tackles, a pair of sacks, and two quarterback hits. In other words, his signing couldn't be going any better.
There is a reason why Gardner-Johnson was available via free agency; other teams felt he would be a risky addition for their own sets of reasons. Chicago decided to take the gamble, though, and it is paying off in a big way as the veteran has already shown with his playmaking abilities and overall approach to the game. This has been evident to Gardner-Johnson's new teammates as well, with Jaquan Brisker offering up one of the best responses to the signing and what he, Gardner-Johnson, and Tyrique Stevenson can accomplish as a trio.
"Especially the way I talk and the way other people talk," Brisker said to ESPN's Courtney Cronin. "We get people's heads. Grown men will be really crying out there. Men with kids. Imagine that. Seriously. It's hilarious. I wish I mic'd up every game."
For teams looking to kick the door down and force themselves into the playoff conversation, much like the Bears are under first-year head coach Ben Johnson, these are the type of low-cost roster additions that can pay major dividends when they work out in the team's favor. This is especially true when some of the higher-priced offseason additions to the roster have not panned out thus far.
In Gardner-Johnson's first game as a member of Chicago's roster, the Super Bowl champion played like a veteran with something to prove as he finished the Bears' win over the Cincinnati Bengals with six total tackles, five of which were of the solo variety, as well as a QB sack. Including the win over the Giants, he now has three sacks while allowing just seven catches on nine targets for 40 yards and a touchdown.
Having a player in the secondary who can be depended upon should only make life easier on the Bears down the stretch, as the stakes are only raised from here. If Gardner-Johnson can continue to contribute at the level he has through his first two weeks with the team, those secondary concerns may not be as substantial down the stretch as fans had feared.

Bradford football hooligan who won £1m on EuroMillions 'nearly lost it all' over rule – Yorkshire Live

A former football hooligan who scooped £1,000,000 on the EuroMillions has revealed he nearly missed out on his windfall due to a technicality.
Daniel Wright, whose book Northern Monkeys is a fictionalised account of his time as part of Bradford City's notorious firm "The Ointment," was on holiday when he discovered his life-changing win.
Speaking to podcaster James English, Daniel recalled the moment he came across the incredible message he'd won. He explained: "I just thought I'd check my emails, and I saw on that said 'You've won on EuroMillions.' I thought it would be £2.50 or something."
However, when Daniel opened the official lottery app, a prominent notification confirmed his substantial prize. He said: "I wasn't really paying attention. I thought I'd won £1,000, then I thought 'That's not £1,000. I must have counted it 10 times, then I shouted 'Woo!' Like Rick Flair."
Yet there was a potential complication with Daniel's jackpot.
"I won the UK match matchmaker," he explains. "But I was in Cape Verde at the time. If I'd bought that ticket in Cape Verde, I wouldn't have got paid."
Daniel's ticket had been purchased through a regular weekly direct debit. However, he was abroad when the draw took place.
When he contacted lottery officials to claim his winnings, they questioned him about his location when purchasing the ticket: "They said to me, 'Where did you put the ticket on?' And I said 'Well, it's a standing order, so it just comes out my bank every month'.
"They said, "Alright, that's alright – but if you'd have bought the ticket while you were abroad, we won't pay you. Imagine that. Imagine if that happened to you.
"So, if you ever win the lottery and you're on holiday, don't ring them until you get back."
Daniel still had 10 days remaining in Cape Verde, meaning he couldn't claim his winnings for a fortnight.
That was sufficient time for him to begin worrying whether the entire situation was an elaborate prank, considering it occurred just after April Fools' Day, and then to start experiencing concerns that someone might try to sell a story about his criminal past.
He continued: "I think The Lottery knew that I've been in jail, but it's not it's not a rule that you can't be in in jail and play the lottery."
Once he finally collected his prize money, he wasn't entirely certain what to do with it.
"It's strange feeling because you don't know what to do really," he recalled. "You can do what you want so I went traveling for a bit. I got one of those train tickets that goes around Europe, and you can get on and off wherever you want for a month. But after a bit, I got bored of that.
"Even though it's great going looking at all these different cities, but like there's only so many cathedrals and museums you can see before you think 'F***,I want to do something else'
"So I moved away. I put some money into a couple of businesses here and there and then I just concentrated on writing books. I always wanted to write a novel and I thought 'I've got the perfect chance now,' just so I did that."
