In her debut novel, ‘The Curse of the Vedic Code’, Jaya Siva Murty masterfully weaves together ancient Vedic wisdom, the intrigue of artificial intelligence, and the allure of a gripping mystery. The novel’s premise, blending the traditional with the contemporary, reflects her deep-rooted connection with India’s cultural heritage and her storytelling abilities.
In a candid conversation, Visakhapatnam-based Jaya shares the journey of bringing her vision to life and the inspiration behind her work.
Born and raised in Lucknow who spent a considerable time in rural and tribal parts of Andhra Pradesh post marriage, Jaya was immersed in the richness of Indian culture from an early age. These experiences, she says, were instrumental in shaping her world-view. “Living in these regions opened me up to the treasure trove of wisdom India possesses. It’s our inheritance, and I felt the responsibility to carry it forward,” she reflects.
Choosing a thriller as her medium was a deliberate decision to connect with younger audiences. “Thrillers have a universal appeal. I wanted to use this genre to make elements of our culture, especially the lesser-known aspects, accessible to the next generation.”
The book delves into jyotisham (astrology), a part of the Atharva Veda. “The Vedas have been with us for centuries, yet they are sidelined in the current education system. Through my story, I wanted to highlight one facet of that ancient knowledge,” Jaya explains.
Bringing authenticity to ‘The Curse of the Vedic Code’ required meticulous research. Jaya spent considerable time interacting with Nadi Shastra experts and astrologers. “Much of the first-hand information I gathered added layers to the narrative. I wanted the interplay of scriptural knowledge and AI to feel seamless and intriguing throughout the book,” she says.
Reflecting on the challenges of writing her first novel, Jaya shares, “First drafts are always messy. It’s okay if your writing doesn’t read as well as you want it to. Rework, edit, and rewrite—it’s all part of the process.”
She credits reading as a critical part of her growth as a writer. “Reading good literature is essential. I encourage aspiring writers to explore a variety of books—it broadens your perspective and sharpens your craft.”
Jaya’s writing style focuses on simplicity and accessibility. “I believe in using language that resonates with everyone. A good story shouldn’t alienate its audience,” she emphasizes.
Character development is another area where Jaya invests significant effort. “Each character should have a distinct personality and voice. It helps create vivid imagery for the reader.”
She also believes a story should appeal to all the senses. “Your reader should be able to see, feel, hear, and even smell what’s happening in the narrative. Whether it’s the aroma of coffee or the steam rising from hot piping idlis, these details make the story come alive.”
For those embarking on their writing journey, Jaya offers sage advice: “Don’t be afraid of imperfection. Writing is an iterative process. The more you read and write, the better you get. Let your story speak to the senses and resonate with the soul.”

National Lottery plc gets licence from gaming authority – MaltaToday

National Lottery plc won a 10-year licence to continue operating Lotto, Super 5 and other popular lottery games
The Malta Gaming Authority (MGA) has officially licenced National Lottery plc, which as of Tuesday 5 July have become the operators of Malta's national lottery games.
The licence will be valid for 10 years and National Lottery plc will be continuing the operation of the Grand Lottery, the Lotto, Super 5, Tiritombola, FASTKENO, scratch-cards, sports betting, and electronic gaming machines.
The concession was granted to National Lottery plc for €105 million, after previous operator Maltco, did not submit a bid.
"I'm sure the new national lottery operators will continue to add to the popularity of the lotto and Super 5, as well as introduce other games, which will further marry the list of games on offer," Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said.
"Our responsibility goes beyond a mere licensing within our regulatory framework. Together we ensure that National Lottery plc continues to promote, design and put into practice the principles of responsible gaming, while protecting its customers. The economic profit from gaming should be given its importance, but not at the expense of the gamblers."
Schembri thanked Maltco, who were the maltese lottery operators for almost 20 full years and MGA for their work to issue the licence and congratulated National Lottery plc for the next decade.
Carl Brincat, CEO of MGA, said that the Authority is confident that operators will devote all necessary resources to maintaining the high level of operation of this licence, as well as protecting the interests of their customers and ensuring accountability in the games.
National Lottery plc will increase payout ratios for the Lotto game, one of several offered under the national lottery concession, to tackle what is believed to be a clandestine network of parallel betting with the official national lottery games
National Lottery plc will take over the operation of the national lottery of Malta from Maltco Lotteries on the 5th of July 2022, with the first Lotto draw earmarked for Saturday 9 July 2022 at 8:35pm

New operator promises to raise national lotteries to 'unprecedented level' – Times of Malta

National Lottery plc a subsidiary of the IZI Group, takes over the operation of national lotteries from Maltco on Saturday, with a promise to improve existing games and introduce new ones.
The new operator has been awarded a 10-year exclusive licence by the Malta Gaming Authority to operate games which include the popular Lotto and Super 5.
The award of this licence concluded a process which started a year ago with an international call for proposals. Two offers were submitted. National Lottery plc’s offer was for €105,077,777. Sisal Malta Consortium submitted a €53,330,001 bid.
Carl Brincat, CEO of the Gaming Authority, while thanking all the stakeholders involved in the process, highlighted the importance for all players in the industry to observe the highest levels of compliance.
“The Authority is confident that the concessionaire shall dedicate all resources necessary to maintain the very highest level of operational and compliance standards, and as has already been made clear, will invest in taking care of its players and doing its utmost to avoid gaming-related harm,” he said when handing over the licence documents.
National Lottery plc CEO, Johann Schembri said this was the opening of a new era for the national lottery of Malta, with plans to grow the lottery market in Malta to unprecedented levels.
“The licence granted by the Malta Gaming Authority confirms the hard work that we have been undertaking and our commitment to deliver an innovative, forward-looking and above all fair and transparent national lottery service. We look forward to these next 10 years to elevate the national lottery service to the highest levels of quality and to grow the market to unprecedented levels,” he said.
Economy Minister Silvio Schembri said this was a historic milestone for the gaming industry in Malta. He said that it had been ensured that  National Lottery plc was committed to promoting, designing and putting into practice the principles of responsible gaming, while protecting the personal well-being of players.
“The national economic profit that translates from gambling should be given importance, but not at the expense of the player” he said.
National Lottery plc takes with the first Lotto draw this Saturday at 8.35pm followed by the first-ever Lotto draw Tuesday. Tuesday Lotto is one of the changes that National Lottery is introducing.
