Q2 1:00 – 49ers 10, Panthers 3
The 49ers extend their lead thanks to a Matt Gay 47-yard field goal. But Brock Purdy throws three consecutive incomplete passes. Two of them were near interceptions.
He definitely isn't himself tonight. But San Francisco is up seven!
Q2 1:59 – 49ers 7, Panthers 3
The first play coming out of the two-minute warning, Brock Purdy fires a 25-yard pass to George Kittle, who makes the completion.
Big play for the 49ers as they are in Carolina territory!
Q2 2:00 – 49ers 7, Panthers 3
It's the two-minute warning of a turnover-laden first half. The 49ers have the ball.
Can they score before the half expires?
Brock Purdy has thrown at least three interceptions in a game twice before: He threw three in a loss to the Chiefs in October last season and four in a loss to the Ravens on Christmas Day in 2023.
The 49ers are 1-7 when Purdy throws multiple interceptions in a game, with the only win coming in the 2025 season opener against Seattle, compared to 24-7 in the rest of Purdy’s starts.
The Panthers have had four goal-to-go plays. They've netted three yards, plus an interception.
They have three points off three interceptions. They trail 7-3 after Ryan Fitzgerald's 25-yard field goal.
Q2 2:28 – 49ers 7, Panthers 3
The Panthers are unable to get into the end zone. The 49ers stop Carolina on third-and-goal, as Bryce Young throws to Chuba Hubbard, and the Panthers running back gets tackled for a loss of 3.
Ryan Fitzgerald kicks the chip-shot field goal to put Carolina on the board. Progress!
Q2 6:27 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
Oh my word! Brock Purdy throws his THIRD interception of the first half. Jaycee Horn records his second pick of the half.
Purdy throws in the middle of the field to nobody. Horn takes advantage and the Panthers start over again on offense.
A mind-boggling first half continues.
Q2 8:00 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
Christian McCaffrey fumbles the football. But the Carolina Panthers are unable to recover the football. Colton McKivitz comes up with it for the 49ers.
What a wild first half in Santa Clara!
Q2 8:12 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
On third-and-2, Bryce Young throws to the Panthers' leading receiver Tetairoa McMillan. The Panthers rookie, however, drops a catchable ball that would've been a first down.
Instead, another punting situation for Carolina. San Francisco starts again on offense at its 17-yard line.
Both QBs are making some baaad decisions. Brock Purdy could have run for the first and then some. Instead, tries to throw one into the end zone for Ricky Pearsall.
Mike Jackson says no thanks. INT. Panthers give up no points off the turnover. (Other than the 7 they should have had.)
Q2 9:41 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
Brock Purdy throws his SECOND interception of the first half. His pass was intended to Ricky Pearsall but it was picked off by Mike Jackson.
Once again, the Panthers prevent points on the board thanks to their defense. Can they take advantage on offense?
Brock Purdy didn't have any scrambles like that nine yarder last week. The way he ran that makes you think his sore toe is feeling a lot better.
Q2 12:24 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
On fourth-and-1, Brock Purdy sneaks for 3 yards to get the first down. Once again, San Francisco is rolling on offense on this drive.
The first quarter was marked by bad throws and a lot of Christian McCaffrey. The 49ers running back has 11 touches, putting him on pace to break his career-high of 37 he set when he was a member of the Panthers. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy, who had two wayward passes dropped by Cardinals defenders last week, didn’t get so lucky with a pass that was a step behind Jauan Jennings and picked off by Jaycee Horn.
Bryce Young had scrambled twice for 12 yards after the Panthers picked off Brock Purdy. On first-and-goal at the 1, the Panthers called a similar play — with Young rolling to his right with the option to throw or keep it. He tried to feather a throw to rookie tight end Mitchell Evans, but safety Ji'Ayir Brown intercepted him in the end zone. Tommy Tremble, another tight end, tried to jump for the ball like he thought it was intended for him. Not sure why the Panthers had two tight ends in the same area, but it wasn't a good result.
Q1 0:00 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
Through one quarter, the San Francisco 49ers lead by seven over the Carolina Panthers. Brock Purdy's TD pass to Jauan Jennings is the only scoring of the game.
That Bryce Young INT looms large in this game so far.
Q1 1:22 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
Bryce Young, what was that? With the Panthers inching closer to scoring, he throws a costly interception in the end zone to Ji'Ayir Brown.
Both quarterbacks throwing interceptions in the first quarter? Wowza!
Q1 3:40 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
I mentioned Jaycee Horn in the build up being the anchor of the Panthers secondary. He gets a HUGE interception off Brock Purdy to put the Panthers in favorable scoring position.
What a play!
Q1 3:49 – 49ers 7, Panthers 0
The Carolina Panthers have a three-and-out to start the game. An offensive holding penalty stymies the Panthers, which get short of the first down marker.
Carolina punts to San Francisco. The 49ers start at their 8-yard line.
