Most East Carolina students live in off-campus housing each year. Utility management is still a top priority for those who rent out apartments. Some are probably budgeting for Spring Break or Study Abroad obligations. With winter approaching, it is important to be proactive about energy conservation.
With effective cost-saving measures, students can comfortably remain warm and toasty without the frostbite of heightened utility bills.
Steve Hawley, Greenville Utilities Commission Communications Manager, explains how students can manage their energy usage. A suitable place to begin is the thermostat. Hawley suggests setting it to “the lowest comfortable setting.”
“The cooler you make it in the house, the easiest it is for your system,” said Hawley, emphasizing that heating “consumes up to 60% of their home’s energy use”. Hawley recommends adjusting the thermostat to 68 degrees or cooler.
“Every degree lower can save you a percentage on your utility bill”. Another helpful tip Hawley offers students is to change their filters monthly if they are using inexpensive ones. Space heaters should also be limited because they are “inefficient for larger areas.”
For water leak prevention, Hawley recommends that” Students should make sure there are no water leaks or drips due to the risk of wasting money.”
