Cumberland County woman’s persistence wins her a $154,168 jackpot – NC Education Lottery

Barbara Munford of Hope Mills played the same Cash 5 numbers for six years and it paid off Monday with a $154,168 jackpot.
“My sister convinced me to keep playing those same numbers,” Munford said. “She told me I was going to win one day.”
Munford, a substitute teacher and grandmother of four, said she checked her numbers from Monday’s drawing just after midnight.
“I was like, ‘Oh my god that’s me, that’s me, I won,’” she recalled. “I was so excited.”
Munford then became emotional when she started thinking about the significance of her big win.
“I was in the living room crying,” she said.
She bought her lucky $1 ticket from Lucky Stop on Legion Road in Hope Mills. The odds of matching all five balls are 1 in 962,598.
“I love the Cash 5 now,” Munford laughed.
Munford claimed her prize Tuesday at lottery headquarters in Raleigh. After required federal and state tax withholdings, she took home $110,616.
She plans to use her winnings to pay bills.
Cash 5 is one of six lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option of buying tickets at a retail location or with Online Play through the lottery’s website or the NC Lottery Official Mobile App. Wednesday’s jackpot is $110,000.

Sports Direct opened a new flagship in Liverpool last week, demonstrating a new store concept in which consumers can both shop and exercise.
20 October 2025
The new three-storey, 90,000 sq ft flagship on Liverpool’s Church Street opened on Friday 17 October, offering gym facilities alongside performance gear and trend-led athleisurewear.
Since 2022, Frasers Group has invested into elevating Sports Direct as part of its wider elevation strategy across all of its brands. To date, more than 50% of Sports Direct’s stores have been remodelled under the strategy.
The new Liverpool store is zoned by sport and training type, allowing customers to navigate with ease and shop by their specific interests – from running, football and swimming to outdoor adventure and racket sports.
An Everlast Gym+ occupies the full third floor of the store, also featuring a reformer pilates studio and a “recovery suite” with ice baths, herbal and dry salt saunas, and a modern, elevated space for post-training reset.
Michael Murray, chief executive officer at Frasers Group, said: “Liverpool is a case study of how our Elevation Strategy is winning. It’s where ambition meets execution: a destination that showcases our strategy’s momentum. With every new opening, we’re not just adding stores, we’re transforming the retail landscape, creating spaces that energise communities and redefine the high street experience.
“This Sports Direct and Everlast Gyms+ opening captures everything our strategy stands for – confidence, innovation, and belief in the future of physical retail. We’re building momentum across the UK and beyond, and Liverpool is the latest example of that success.”

Mega Millions Jackpot Grows To $843M For Fridays Drawing: What To Know In PA – Patch

PENNSYLVANIA — The jackpot for Friday’s Mega Millions drawing has grown to the eighth-highest in the game’s history. At $843 million, the prize is fueling ticket sales among regular lottery players in Pennsylvania and others dreaming about what they’d do if they became overnight multimillionaires.
The massive jackpot, which has a cash value of $391.7 million, grew after no one matched all six numbers in Tuesday’s drawing: the white balls 11, 14, 17, 50 and 57, plus the gold Mega Ball 6.
To play the lottery game in Pennsylvania, residents 18 and older can sign up online here. Residents can also visit any Pennsylvania Lottery retailer to purchase a Mega Millions playslip.
The Pennsylvania Lottery shares Mega Millions results on the lottery RSS feeds. Results will also be aired on the Mega Millions drawing on TV. Players can also visit the Lottery VIP Players Club to sign up for emails and text messages to receive winning lottery number alerts for Mega Millions and other games.
Tickets are $5 each, with a built-in multiplier feature added in April that automatically increases non-jackpot prizes by 2, 3, 4, 5, or 10 times. Previously, the base ticket was $2, and the multiplier was an optional $1 add-on in most states.
The rule changes were designed to produce larger, faster-growing jackpots and more non-jackpot prizes The changes slightly improved the odds of winning the jackpot, from 1 in 302,575,350 to 1 in 290,472,336, achieved by decreasing the gold Mega Ball pool from 25 to 24 numbers.
The odds of winning any prize also improved, from 1 in 24 to 1 in 23.
Friday’s drawing is the 38th since the jackpot was last won in Virginia on June 27. It’s the longest streak without a jackpot winner since the game began in 2002, and the previous record of 37 drawings was set in January 2021, when a $1.050 billion jackpot was won in Michigan.
Mega Millions said 606,046 winning tickets valued at more than $12.2 million were sold across all prize tiers in Tuesday’s drawing, including 12 tickets that matched four white balls plus the Mega Ball to win third-tier prizes ranging from $20,000 to $40,000, depending on their multiplier. Those tickets were sold in Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Wyoming.
In this jackpot run to date, there have been almost 11.7 million winning tickets at all levels, with total prizes exceeding $274 million due to significant enhancements to lower-tier prizes in changes made to the game last April, Mega Millions said.

SC Seeks UP Government’s Reply on QR Code Mandate for Eateries Along Kanwar Yatra Route – Law Trend

The Supreme Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government on a petition challenging its directive mandating the display of QR codes at all eateries along the kanwar yatra route, which allegedly disclose the names and identities of shop owners.
A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and N. Kotiswar Singh sought the state’s response by July 22 on the plea filed by academician Apoorvanand Jha and others, who argue that the directive amounts to discriminatory profiling based on religious and caste identities.
The petitioners pointed to a June 25 press release issued by the UP administration, which requires dhabas, restaurants, and stalls along the yatra route to display QR codes revealing owner details. They contend that this move revives the same policy the top court had stayed last year when BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Madhya Pradesh had asked eateries to publicly display the names of owners and staff along the pilgrimage route.
“The new QR code system achieves the same discriminatory outcome that this Court previously stayed,” the petition states, arguing that the policy violates the fundamental right to privacy of the shopkeepers and imposes unnecessary religious profiling under the guise of lawful licensing.
The plea also underscores that the directive indirectly pressures vendors to reveal their religious and caste identities, which has a chilling effect on their freedom to conduct business.
The kanwar yatra, a major annual pilgrimage during the Hindu month of Shravan, involves devotees—known as kanwariyas—carrying holy water from the Ganga to offer at Shiva temples. During this period, many participants follow strict dietary restrictions, with many avoiding meat, onion, and garlic.
The court’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over the intersection of religious practices and state enforcement mechanisms, especially when such policies may infringe upon constitutional rights.
The matter will be heard next on July 22.

Euromillions lottery winner celebrates £1m prize – BBC

A self-described "semi-retired" man, who has played the lottery for several years, has won a £1m jackpot.
The man, from Reading, scooped the EuroMillions Millionaire Maker top prize in a draw in May this year, after buying a ticket at a local shop.
The Berkshire local said his success was "fantastic news", adding that he planned to celebrate "with a nice meal".
He had automatically been enrolled in the competition after buying a ticket for the regular EuroMillions draw, the National Lottery said.
Summing up the moment he found out he won, he said: "I checked my ticket on the app and was shocked when I saw that I had won the Millionaire Maker prize."
Andy Carter, from Allwyn – the operator of the National Lottery – said the win was "incredible for this lucky man from the Reading area".
"What a life-changing moment it must have been for him when he realised that he is now £1m richer – we hope he enjoyed his celebratory meal," he added.
The National Lottery, which was founded in the mid-1990s, has raised more than £50bn for charitable causes since it started.
The National Lottery Heritage Fund supports art and sport groups, community causes and the preservation of landmarks across the country, stating it has donated £460m to more than 24,100 projects since 1994.
New Reading boss Leam Richardson says he has already started to plan his future player recruitment.

Lotto winner who lost ticket takes Maltco to court in battle to claim her winnings – MaltaToday

A woman who claims to have lost her winning lotto ticket after being treated in hospital has filed a prohibitory injunction against lottery operator Maltco, seeking to prohibit the company from transferring her winnings to third parties
A woman who claims to have lost her winning lotto ticket after being treated in hospital has filed a prohibitory injunction against lottery operator Maltco, seeking to prohibit the company from transferring her winnings to third parties, saying the matter is one of life and death.
The €820,000 Lotto Quaterno+ jackpot had been won on 18 May by a ticket bought from Qawra, but on 5 June, the operator issued a press release, explaining that the winnings had not yet been claimed and if the holder of the lucky ticket did not come forward by 17 July, the winnings would be donated to charity.
She explained that she had been trying her luck by playing the same numbers over the last nine months, always taking her old tickets to a Qawra point of sale to have them scanned and replaced with new tickets.
It was shortly after being discharged from hospital that she had misplaced the winning ticket which was inadvertently thrown away with the ‘old’ batch of tickets, she told the court in her application.
But the woman is arguing that she had indeed claimed the winnings, first informally, then by means of a judicial letter dated 20 June 2019, and then by means of a court case which was filed on 8 July 2019. In addition, she had successfully obtained the issuing of a warrant of description in order to retrieve I.T. data held by Maltco Lotteries Limited, that would strengthen her case.
Following media reports that the jackpot was to be donated to charity, the woman filed a prohibitory injunction today, seeking an order from the court to prohibit Maltco Lotteries Limited from transferring the winnings to third parties.
“My client would like to clarify that she appreciates the benefit derived by the money being given to the Good Causes Funds, and does a lot of charity herself,” said lawyer Carlos Bugeja, appearing on behalf of the woman.
“However, she has ample evidence proving that she bought the winning ticket, which unfortunately she was dispossessed of due to the ordeal of having been admitted to hospital because of grave and serious health issues.

“Indeed, due to these same health issues, for my client, this is a matter of literally life and death, and not one of simple monetary gain.”
