Podologist helps wounded victim of Birkirkara Lotto booth hold-up – Times of Malta

A podologist came to the aid of a distressed cashier who was injured in a hold-up at the Lotto booth in Birkirkara on Tuesday.
The health professional calmed down the victim and treated the “deep cut” she suffered on her finger.
The robbery took place at around 3.30pm on Triq Dun Karm, most commonly known as Birkirkara Bypass.
Police said that a masked robber armed with a knife, put his hand through the window to grab cash from the cashier – a 57-year-old woman. She was injured during the altercation.
A podologist who works at Amrita Footcare and Wellness Centre – located around the corner from the Lotto booth at Giovanni Papaffy Road – told Times of Malta she spotted a panicked woman in front of the booth as she was walking towards the clinic.
“I didn’t do anything special. I saw someone who needed help, and I did what I could,” the podologist, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.
As the podologist approached the woman she noticed that the woman – who was clearly in shock – was bleeding from her hand.
She eventually told the podologist about the  “hold-up” and that someone had approached her with a “sharp ruler”.
“It was obviously not a ruler – the cut was too deep. She was in shock,” the podologist said.
When it started to drizzle, the podologist accompanied the cashier to the clinic around the corner where she could see to her wound while she waited for the ambulance.
With the help of a doctor, the podologist cleaned the wound and bandaged the woman’s finger. The cut was too deep for butterfly stitches.
Other pedestrians – who did not witness the hold-up – told Times of Malta some eight police officers showed up on the site of the robbery.
The Birkirkara hold-up was followed by a similar one in Burmarrad at around 6pm. The cashier at the Burmarrad lotto booth, who was uninjured, said the suspect was also carrying a knife.
The police could not confirm whether the same person robbed both booths.
It said investigations were ongoing as the suspect/s were still at large.

Kanwar Yatra: Eateries along route must display owner info via QR codes, mandates Meerut administration | Latest News India – Hindustan Times

Ahead of the annual Kanwar Yatra beginning on July 11, the Meerut district administration has mandated that all food joints along the Kanwar Yatra route prominently display critical information, including a list of food items and their prices.
Divisional commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod said, “The district administration is ensuring that a list of food items and their prices is displayed outside all food joints along the Kanwar Yatra route. This ensures Kanwariyas are not overcharged and can make informed choices.”
The food safety department has been tasked with ensuring that all food joints display their mandatory food safety registration certificates, which include the owner’s name and registration number.
To further enhance accountability, each establishment must display a QR code that allows pilgrims to scan and access detailed information about the food joint’s ownership and compliance status. “This is being done to ensure Kanwariyas receive good quality and pure food during their journey,” Dr. Yashod added.
The administration has warned that strict action will be taken against non-compliant businesses under Section 55 of the Food Safety Act, 2006, which could result in fines of up to 2 lakh.
The Kanwar Yatra is an annual pilgrimage undertaken by Lord Shiva’s devotees, known as kanwariyas, who fetch holy water from the Ganga during the auspicious Hindu month of Shravan. This holy water is then offered to Lord Shiva. The yatra draws millions of pilgrims to the region.
Meanwhile, in neighbouring Uttarakhand, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and health minister Dhan Singh Rawat have directed the health department to implement a dedicated action plan to provide pure and safe food to devotees during the upcoming yatra, according to an official statement.
In July 2024, the Uttar Pradesh government ordered hotels, restaurants, food carts and eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route to display the names of their owners. The Uttarakhand government also issued a similar direction, of installing nameplates on board across the Yatra route to facilitate the pilgrims.
The Uttar Pradesh government’s order came days after the Muzaffarnagar Police issued directives to all the eateries on the Yatra route to display the names of their respective owners to avoid any “confusion”.
The Supreme Court had intervened and stayed the move, noting that there was no government order empowering the police to give directions in this case. The apex court observed that such directions could be issued under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, or the Street Vendors Act, 2014, to ensure “shudh shakahari” (strictly vegetarian) food is served. The court stated that restaurants should indicate the type of food they serve but not be forced to display the names and identities of owners.

The Ultimate Guide To Entering (And Winning) An Affordable Housing Lottery – House Digest

If you live in a city with sky-high rent prices like New York or San Francisco, then affordable housing lotteries should absolutely be on your radar. These government-subsidized programs designate a number of units in certain buildings at a regulated monthly rent that’s below market rate and intended to be accessibly priced for a range of budgets. “The definition of affordability is you pay no more than 30% of your total household monthly income toward rent,” including utilities, social worker Elizabeth Purcell told Realtor.com. Available apartments are usually tiered based on applicants’ income, assets, and the number of people living in their household — in other words, you might pay more in rent than someone who earns less money or has fewer assets than you, and vice versa. The programs are lottery-style, meaning that anyone who meets the eligibility requirements can apply, but winners are ultimately chosen at random.
Maybe you meet the income qualifications for this lottery or a similar program in a building in your city, and now you’re curious about submitting an application before the deadline. If so, keep reading for everything you need to know about how to enter (and hopefully win) affordable housing. Best of luck!
First, you’ll need to do some research into affordable housing lotteries in your area. Head to the official website for your city’s government, or run a Google search. Once you’ve found some viable options, double-check the requirements to make sure that you qualify (and, you know… would actually want to live in that apartment if you got called). Then, apply online via the corresponding website.
You can also get ahead of the game by compiling the many materials you’ll need to provide for verification purposes should you get lucky and be chosen to rent an apartment. That may include pay stubs from your job, past bank statements and tax documents, proof of assets, proof of your rental history, and a copy of your birth certificate. While getting all your ducks in a row won’t help you win, it will help expedite the eventual approval process, which can be extensive and time-consuming. Experts say it’s not uncommon for lottery winners to bail just because they were intimidated by all the paperwork.
After you’ve filed your application (or applications, plural), it’s basically a waiting game. Either you’ll get a request to submit the aforementioned documents for verification, or you’ll never get a response because you weren’t one of the selected applicants. It can take months to hear back, so you’ll need to be patient. To maximize your chances of winning, apply to multiple lotteries in different buildings simultaneously. That’s totally kosher. Try to be flexible and open-minded about the neighborhood or type of building, too, which can expand your options greatly.
Are your odds of being chosen pretty low? Yeah, probably, especially if you live in a bustling, densely populated city like New York, where some 3.5 million people apply to housing lotteries each year. You might be given preference in the system if you have a disability, already live near the building, work for your city, or serve on your community board. Regardless, keep your docs handy and organized. And even if you don’t hear back, keep your online profile up to date, and check your email periodically — you might have been added to the waitlist for vacancies in those buildings and could hear from them when current or future tenants leave.

“I’ve never met anyone like Tennie.”
That’s how one neighbor at Stones River Manor in Murfreesboro describes Tennie Fitzpatrick, who has mastered as many as seven different musical instruments. Each day, Tennie shares those talents with residents, workers and visitors. It’s an ability Tennie herself believes is “a gift from God.” That’s because Tennie is blind, and overcame a difficult, abusive childhood.  Forrest Sanders shares this truly inspirational story.
