A lot of gifts still to be unwrapped in this holiday season.<br><strong>Eric Smith: </strong>For me, it’s all about the new car. Series president J. Douglas Boles provided an update on the 2028 chassis during the IMS oval test in late October, noting that team owners and managers were recently shown an updated look at the design. A public unveiling is expected before the end of the first quarter of 2026, with a physical car to follow soon after. The series introduced the DW12 for the 2012 season, updated it with the current UAK package in 2018 and added the Aeroscreen in 2020. The 2028 chassis will represent the next major evolution.<br><strong>Arni Sribhen:</strong> While Curt is curious about the field for the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge, I’m more curious about the field of full-time drivers for the 2026 season. As of today, Dale Coyne Racing still has a chartered race seat available, and the status of PREMA Racing is likely to be decided soon as well. The names associated with the seat alongside <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/motor/dennis-hauger-driver" class="entity">Dennis Hauger</a> at Dale Coyne’s team have been interesting to say the least. Will the longtime INDYCAR team owner opt for a veteran to pair alongside the 2025 INDY <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/motor/indy-nxt" class="entity">NXT</a> by Firestone champ? Or will he opt for another newcomer? Should PREMA return, both <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/motor/callum-ilott-driver" class="entity">Callum Ilott</a> and <a href="https://www.foxsports.com/motor/robert-shwartzman-2-driver" class="entity">Robert Shwartzman</a> are expected to be back in the field. It all adds up to the 2026 full-time lineup being one of the most competitive in series history.<br><strong>Paul Kelly:</strong> I'm very curious about the new look of INDYCAR officiating. DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys are the top two teams in the hunt for an NFC wild card and are still holding on to hopes of competing for division championships.
Detroit (7-5) hosts Dallas (6-5-1) on Thursday night and the winner will improve its position in the playoff picture while the loser may not have time to recover from the setback over the last month of the regular season.
“Our margin for error is very small right now,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “We’ve got to find a way to win this next one in front of us.
“Time’s running out.”
After starting 5-2, the two-time defending NFC North champions have lost three of five to fall behind division-leading Chicago (9-3) and second-place Green Bay (8-3-1).
The Cowboys, meanwhile, are surging into postseason contention.
They’re over .500 for the first time this year thanks to three straight victories – including one over Philadelphia – to potentially challenge the NFC East-leading Eagles (8-3) for the division title.
Dallas quarterback Dak Prescott acknowledged he looked up the NFC playoff picture this week after he saw the AFC rundown on TV.
“We just win and handle our business, we’ll put ourselves in a great spot,” Prescott said.
Dallas’ secondary has enjoyed the return of several injured players in recent weeks, most notably both starting safeties in Malik Hooker and Donovan Wilson. It appears 2021 All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs could be back against the Lions, although coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team was still determining his availability after he was a limited participant during the first two practices of the week.
Diggs has missed the past six games with a concussion and issues with both knees, including a left knee that has been surgically repaired twice in the past two years. He was initially sidelined by the concussion, which he suffered in an accident at home.
The former Alabama player led the league with 11 interceptions in 2021 in his second season. He has a total of six interceptions in the four seasons since then, and is at risk of going without one for the first time in his NFL career.
“I know who I am,” Diggs told reporters this week, declining to go into detail on the circumstances of the concussion. “I know what I can do on the field, and I’m going to put that out there and show if they forgot, I’m going to make sure to remind them.”
Lions edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson broke his left leg in two places in last year’s 47-9 early-season win at Dallas, ending his season.
Hutchinson has 8 1/2 sacks, a career-high four forced fumbles and 24 quarterback hits this season.
“Knowing how good of a player he is, we’ll have eyes on him and as many hands as we can,” Prescott said.
While Hutchinson has had an impact in most games, he did not have a sack or a QB hit in last week’s loss to Green Bay.
Detroit has played 56 regular-season games over three-plus years without losing two in a row. If the Lions win on Thursday night, the streak without consecutive setbacks will be the league’s longest since New England’s 57-game run that ended in 2006, according to Sportradar.
The Cowboys and Lions are playing for the third straight year after splitting the last two memorable matchups in Dallas.
Detroit ended a six-game losing streak against Dallas with a 47-9 victory at AT&T Stadium last season. It was the most lopsided loss under owner Jerry Jones, who bought the Cowboys in 1989.
Two years ago, Detroit lost at Dallas 20-19 after a 2-point conversion pass to offensive lineman Taylor Decker was negated because the officials said offensive lineman Dan Skipper reported as eligible and Decker did not.
Each time Skipper has reported as eligible at home games since then, the crowd has roared for a player who has become an unlikely fan favorite.
“He’s reliable, dependable, and he does a lot of jobs for us,” Campbell said.
Dallas has the NFL’s top-ranked offense, averaging 393 yards a game, and ranks second with 29.3 points per game. Detroit averages 376 yards of offense, ranking third, and 29.2 points to tie for third in the league.
The game will feature teams averaging at least 375 yards and 29 points for just the fifth time since 1970.

UNIVERSITY PARK — True freshman Kayden Mingo scored six of his 21 points inside the final two minutes to help Penn State pull away and beat Campbell 87-76 on Tuesday night.
Freddie Dilione V added 17 points for Penn State, which is 8-1 for the second-straight year. Josh Reed and Ivan Juric scored 16 points apiece.
The Nittany Lions had its largest lead, 68-54, with 11:17 remaining in the game. The Camels followed with a 15-6 surge to cut the deficit to 74-69 with 3:13 to play. Jeremiah Johnson and DJ Smith each made two from long range during the stretch.
Mingo answered with a layup with 1:36 left and then shot 4 of 4 from the free-throw line. The Nittany Lions shot 52% overall (30 of 58) and 88% (22 of 25) from the line.
Penn State closed the first half on a 16-6 run for a 46-39 lead at the break. Mingo scored 15 first-half points and Dilione finished with 13.
The Fighting Camels continued to battle down the stretch, cutting the lead as low as five points on a pair of occasions. A reply from long range by Reed temporarily stymied Campbell’s success, and Tunca was able to add a pair of points at the line moments later.
Fortunately for PSU, Mingo was able to tack on a driving layup at the 1:36 mark, and a pair of free throws from Dilione V effectively iced the game at 83-74 with just over a minute remaining. Penn State’s defense was able to hold on over the final 60 seconds to come away with the

NEW ULM — Marshall Tigers sophomore Oliver Voigt’s game-high 22 points and 20 rebounds led his team to a 75-64 win over the New Ulm Eagles on Tuesday night in a Big South Conference boys basketball game.
It was the season opener for both teams.
Despite some hiccups at the foul line, including missing his last five shots from the charity stripe to close out the first half, the 6-7 forward was dominant under the basket early on as he led all players with 14 points at the half.
“He’s still growing,” Marshall head coach Travis Carroll said. “There’s stretches where we had some nice runs for some stretches and there’s some stretches where we need to get the rebound, come to a jump stop, that comes with time and experience. It was good he was able to have some experience as a ninth-grader going into his 10th-grade year. First game, there are some flashes, but there’s also some things that definitely need to button up. Not just for him, but for the rest of the kids.”
While Carroll wanted to see more consistent rebounding from his team overall, he was happy to see his players outrebound the Eagles 45-24 in the game.
Andrew Lee added 17 points for the Tigers, while Noah Pieper added 10 points.
The Eagles struggled to find their shot and had trouble defending the paint, but they got a late surge of offense in the first half to keep things manageable, led by Joey Wise and Noah Mertz.
After free throws from Voigt had Marshall up 30-17 with 5:30 left in the first half, Wise found Mertz inside for 2 and a putback bucket by Mertz made it a 30-21 game. An and-one by Wise had New Ulm down 30-24, but Carson Mensink stole a rebound away from the New Ulm defense and put it back up in the paint for a bucket and 32-24 Marshall lead at the half.
Mensink finished with 9 points.
While Mitchell Hopp and Levi Hopp led the Eagles with 15 and 13 points, respectively, Wise finished with 12 points and created a few turnovers with his extra efforts on defense.
The second half wasn’t kind to the Eagles as the Tigers pushed their lead to 59-39 following an and-one by Lee. That capped off an 8-0 Marshall run.
New life came for the Eagles when baskets from Mitchell Hopp, Wise, another from Mitchell Hopp and a pair of free throws from Marquise Poncelet had the Eagles down 60-47 moments later.
A steal for a layup by Wise had the Eagles down 66-55 and a 3 from Wise had the Eagles down 71-62 in the final minute, but it was too late for the Eagles as the Tigers held on.
“We can take away that we learned something,” Wise said. “We’ve just got to get a body on somebody, get those boards and just play with more energy, that’s the biggest thing.”
New Ulm started the game forcing an early Marshall timeout after a 3 from Zach Hubbard put the Eagles up 7-4. But a 13-0 Marshall run followed that out of the timeout for a 17-7 lead. The run started with a layup from Brody Riess and featured an and-one by Aiden Bly and two buckets apiece from Lee and Voigt.
Carroll said his team has some things to work on, but he was happy overall with the offense.
“We were able to get some paint touches and action to the rim in the second half and by doing that, that kind of opens up some things on the perimeter,” Carroll said. “We do have some guys in the paint that can do some things in the paint, but we do have some guys on the perimeter that can knock down some shots.
“We lost a great group last year and are still working through what our team is right now. … New Ulm has a strong team. Their perimeter play is outstanding and they’re going to continue to improve throughout the season and when we see them come January, they’ll be a much-improved team and hopefully we can improve as we work into the season as well.”

TRACY — Griffin Zick exploded for 34 points for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team on Tuesday, leading the Panthers past Red Rock Central for an 85-57 non-conference win.
Zick shot 11 of 17 from the field with a 3-pointer in the win, and also shot 11 of 13 from beyond the arc. His seven total rebounds also ranked fourth on the team, and he came up with a block and a steal on the defensive end.
Sy Sanders and Jackson Kruse each grabbed 11 total rebounds for TMB, including seven on the offensive glass for Kruse. The two also tied with a team-high six assists.
Henry Stavnes led RRC with 23 points and came away with a pair of steals on defense while Jordan Therkilsen added 11 points with five assists.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-0) hosts Renville County West (0-1) for its Camden Conference opener on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Red Rock Central (0-2) will play its conference opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m., taking on Murray County Central (0-0) in Slayton in Red Rock Conference play.
Lakeview 68, YME 37
GRANITE FALLS — Trevor Tusberg led a group of four Lakers in double figures on Tuesday night as the Lakeview boys basketball team defeated Yellow Medicine East 68-37.
Tusberg shot an efficient 8 of 9 from the field for 19 points. Braylon Breyfogle also added in another 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting, while Nash Bigler went 3 of 4 from 3-point range for 11 points and Cody Helmke shot 4 of 4 for 10 points.
For the Sting, Connor Fagen led the way with 21 points and tied Cooper McCosh with six rebounds. Fagen also blocked four shots to provide an important interior presence on defense.
Lakeview (2-0) takes on Wabasso (1-0) for a non-conference matchup in Wabasso on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. while Yellow Medicine East (0-1) also prepares for a non-conference road game against Benson on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team bounced back from its season-opening loss to Dawson-Boyd with a lopsided win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda in its Red Rock Conference opener on Tuesday. The Knights jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Coyotes 78-39.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (1-1) continues its Red Rock Conference slate on Tuesday when it heads to Westbrook to take on the Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers (0-1) at 7:30 p.m.

Edgerton 80, Canby 47
CANBY — Owen Peterson tallied a game-high 18 points behind four 3-pointers, but the Canby boys basketball team suffered an 80-47 loss to Edgerton Tuesday night in a non-conference matchup.
Brennan Johnson followed with another 7 points, as did Jace Rangaard with 6 points. Will Abrahamson had 5 points along with his team-high four rebounds and three steals.
Peterson’s 18 points came on 7 for 17 shooting, who also had two assists.
Canby (0-1) travels to Granite Falls to take on Yellow Medicine East (0-1) in Camden Conference play on Monday at 7:15 p.m.

Wabasso 95, RCW 86
WABASSO — Brayden Guetter’s 41 points powered the Wabasso boys basketball team to a 95-86 season-opening win Tuesday night over Renville County West in a non-conference game.
Guetter shot 14 for 23 from the field, and also had six rebounds and a team-high five assists.
Drew Kemp also had a hot-hand for the Rabbits, finishing with 23 points behind a team-best four 3-pointers.
Although Wabasso struggled with turnovers, giving up 25, its offensive production made up for its mistakes and shot 36 for 60 from the field collectively.
Jack Burns also had 10 points.
Caden Frericks led the way with 11 rebounds, also dishing out three assists.
Frericks, Kemp and Burns all had two steals as well.
Wabasso (1-0) hosts Lakeview (2-0) for a non-conference matchup in its next game on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
