Josh Honohan was the one on the receiving end of Harry Nevin’s high tackle which resulted in the red card that changed the course of FAI Cup Final, but the Shamrock Rovers defender believes the Cork City man’s challenge was just “mistimed” rather than “malicious.”
Relegated City had been frustrating the champions until Nevin’s red mist shortly before the interval helped swing the showpiece occasion, which was ultimately settled by two second half goals from Rory Gaffney, in Rovers’ favour.
But speaking shortly after full-time, the former City star defended his fellow Cork native although he did admit it had a significant impact on the decider.
“Look, he’s caught me high,” began Honohan.
“I wouldn’t know him personally, but I know a bit of him, and I know enough that it’s not malicious or he hasn’t gone out to hurt me.

“I think he’s just mistimed it. He’s just caught me under the shin-guard, and he hasn’t done it on purpose.
“He’s probably just mistimed it. It did have an impact on the game, but I suppose those are the margins it comes down to, especially, it’s a one-off game, anything can happen, and the decision went that way.
“I think people looked at the table and they were kind of bigging it up like they were underdogs, and we were the overwhelming favourites which is not the case when it comes to a fight.
“And we had Thursday night to come back from and focus on this game, and we had to respect them.
“We know they’re a good team. I know the table says one thing, but they’ve had good results since Ger Nash came in, we knew that they’d be up for this, and they started well.
“Ed (McGinty) made some good saves and that’s what Ed does, that’s why he’s one of the best keepers in the league, the best.
“And obviously the red card… we had some chances in the first half and in the second half, I thought we were the much better team.”
Honohan, who helped the Rebel Army win the First Division title in 2022 before signing for the Hoops following their relegation in November 2023, insisted this was the reason why he swapped City for Rovers; to win a league and cup double.
But now that has been achieved, the 24-year-old left the door open to seeking a new challenge elsewhere with Lincoln City, who had a bid believed to have been in the region of €625,000 rejected by Rovers in September, likely to return to the table.
“I’m not sure. We’ll see what the future holds,” added Honohan.
“I don’t think anyone knows. I think football is kind of that kind of sport where it can change so quickly, you know. I’m just buzzing to get over the line today.
“I’ve always said since I’ve come here, since I kicked the ball here, I want to become the best player that I can be and that’s always my goal. Football is an unpredictable game. We just have to see what the story is.
“This is why you come to this club, to be competing for stuff like that and to do the double.

“We’ve had a great year; we still have a bit to go but I think that’s top of the charts. It’s one of the best feelings I’ve had in my career, delighted and relieved.”
The Carrigaline native will now enjoy a few days off before Rovers begin preparations for their Conference League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk at Tallaght Stadium on November 27.
He may even get the chance to head to a warmer climate although had it not been for a niggling injury, he could have been linking up with the Republic of Ireland squad for their games against Portugal and Hungary this week.
“It’s just a bit of a knock. I’ve had it for a while. I’m struggling, to be honest,” added Honohan, who was in the Ireland squad for their friendlies against Senegal and Luxembourg in June and again for their World Cup qualifer against Armenia in September in place of the injured Sammie Szmodics.
“I’ve been struggling with this for probably the last two or three months and it’s just a case of managing it. It’s just one of those things, it’s obviously frustrating.
“You never want to be injured. I think Heimir (Hallgrimsson) has been brilliant with that. I’m struggling and he knows that, so obviously he’s got a great squad of players to pick from and that’s what he’s done.
“We’ve a couple of days off, so I’ll be, weirdly enough, I’ll be coming back to Cork for a couple of days and just relaxing and, to be honest, just looking forward to just forgetting about football altogether.
“I might try and catch a bit of sun. A couple of lads are going away on holiday, so I might book a late flight and get a bit of sun. Need to get a bit of a tan and get away from this weather!
“We’re back in then and the attention will return to Shakhtar. We’ve another three big games left to go.”

Lady Marauders soccer team one victory from state semifinals – altoonamirror.com

Nov 11, 2025
File photo for the Mirror by Roger Kerekes BG’s Calee Kennedy (10) is surrounded by McConnellsburg defenders on a goal attempt that found the back of the net, courtesy of Lady Marauder teammate Hailey DeGol this past weekend.
For the second time in three seasons, Bishop Guilfoyle Academy is on the doorstep of making the school’s first appearance in the PIAA Class 1A girls soccer championship.
A familiar opponent stands in the Lady Marauders’ way.
BG, the District 6 champion, will take on WPIAL third-place finisher Springdale in the semifinals at Westmont Hilltop’s Price Field at 6 p.m. tonight for the right to play the winner of the other semifinal — District 4 champion Muncy and District 1 winner Faith Christian — in Saturday’s PIAA championship at Northeastern High School in Manchester at 7 p.m.
Springdale defeated BG, 2-1, in the PIAA quarterfinals a year ago.
“There are always some mixed thoughts on (playing a team again),” BG coach Joe DeLeo said. “But we are happy to get them back. Both teams are different this year of course. Teams change every year. We’re doing whatever we can to prepare for them just like we’re sure they are for us.”
File photo for the Mirror by Roger Kerekes Bishop Guilfoyle’s Meggie Ritchey (left) fights for the ball with McConnellsburg’s Laynee Hendershot during this past weekend’s playoff game.
Springdale took a 1-0 lead in that game and held on to it until a late goal by Emma Marasco before Hailey Marchlewski, a senior on this year’s team, scored her second goal of the game just 67 seconds later in a 2-1 victory. Springdale went on to win its semifinal game before losing in the state final.
“Their midfielder (Marchlewski), she hurt us last year,” DeLeo said. “She played a slightly different position last year, but she’s still a very good player. We have been spending a good bit of time on how to defend her — the rest of the team is very good as well — but we’ve seen her hurt us offensively before, so we’re doing everything we can to minimize that.”
Though Marchlewski is back, several Springdale players, including last year’s leading scorer Briana Ross, have graduated.
“We have about half the team back,” Springdale coach Marc Bentley said. “We lost five senior starters, but we have added a couple freshmen who have done really well.”
Springdale fell to Sewickley Academy in the WPIAL semifinals before avenging that loss on penalty kicks, 7-6, in the PIAA quarterfinals on Saturday.
“I’m really proud of them after losing in the semifinals of the WPIAL tournament to bounce back and win the third-place game and keep winning the next two games in dramatic fashion,” Bentley said. “We found a way to win in overtime (against Windber) and found a way to win in the penalty-kick shootout, even going to extra shooters. I was proud of the resilience of the girls.”
Bentley has been impressed with what he’s seen from Bishop Guilfoyle.
“They were really strong last year, and it was a good, competitive game,” Bentley said. “It could have gone either way. They have a lot of the same players this time around, and any team that wins a PIAA quarterfinal game 6-0 is going to be a tough test in the semifinals. We’re expecting it to be a tough battle and hopefully a good game.”
Two years ago — also at Westmont — Bishop Guilfoyle lost to Riverview, 4-1, playing this deep into the PIAA tournament for the first time. One of the Lady Marauders’ best players, Sarah Geishauser, was hurt during the game.
Now the team, and some of the players who played in that game, have a second chance.
“To me it’s a testament to the hard work of our coaches and team,” DeLeo said. “We’re obviously very happy to get here, because it takes not just effort but tremendous belief in yourself as a team to get here. They have been working as a team all year and some of them several years together to get to this point. We’re excited for it, and we’re going to give it our best effort.”
Delaney Lechner, part of a senior class along with Payton Ronan and Hailey DeGol, scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Seneca in the PIAA first round.
“I love being a part of the BG soccer team and couldn’t have made it where we are today without my teammates,” Lechner said. “We have such a strong bond that translates on and off the field.”
Springdale is hoping to lean on its experience tonight.
“It’s been really good for the girls who are returning from playing in the state final last year,” Bentley said. “They have been there and know how to win those tough games in those tough moments. The support of the school and the community has also been a big factor for the girls with how proud they are to represent Springdale.”
DeLeo said one of the major keys to tonight’s game will be getting off to a good start and playing from ahead.
“It’s everything,” DeLeo said. “We want to be in that position. We want to put the pressure back on them. We have great faith in our defense, so any lead is obviously very helpful in a match you expect to be very close.”

Villanova seeks to build momentum against Sacred Heart – CBS Sports

If not listed, please contact your TV provider.
After a close loss in its season opener, Villanova bounced back with a win its last time out. The Wildcats hope to carry that momentum into Tuesday’s home date against Sacred Heart.
Under first-year coach Kevin Willard, Villanova (1-1) dropped a 71-66 decision to No. 8 BYU in its opening contest of the campaign. The Wildcats shot just 35.8 percent from the field and 28.6 percent from 3-point range, not to mention a disappointing 8-of-15 effort from the foul line.
Things went much better in a 94-74 win over Queens University on Saturday, as Bryce Lindsay poured in 25 points and Acaden Lewis had 21 on 9-of-13 shooting.
“Coach Willard stuck with me,” said Lewis, who scored five points on 1-of-6 shooting against BYU. “He knows I’m a freshman. I had a rough first game. I stayed with it, watched film and was just happy to get back out there with my guys.”
Meanwhile, Duke Brennan has been a model of consistency for the Wildcats. The senior has pulled down 35 rebounds in the first two games, including 20 against Queens, and he’s also averaging 12.5 points per contest.
“Duke just plays so hard,” said Willard. “If you’ve never played against him, he’s going to outwork you. That’s what I love about him.”
Sacred Heart (1-1) is coming off a 92-80 defeat against Duquesne in which Nyle Ralph-Beyer led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds. Dashon Gittens chipped in with 16 points, while Anquan Hill added 13.
The Pioneers shot just 37.5 percent from the field and 23.3 percent from outside the arc. They attempted 46 free throws, knocking down 31, and committed 11 turnovers, including four by Mekhi Conner.
“The coaches are way tougher on us this year,” said Conner, who is 2-of-12 from the field this season. “Just little things that we would get away with last year, we’re not getting away with last year.”
