PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — You may have seen people collecting signatures at the polls on Tuesday. Right now, there's a push to ban trans athletes, specifically from girls sports, and get that on the ballot next year.
We found groups collecting signatures in Portland and South Portland Tuesday.
Their proposed referendum would ban trans athletes from sports teams and locker rooms that don't align with a student's gender at birth.
That would contradict the current Maine Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
If the petition gets the 68,000 or so valid signatures needed to make the ballot, and voters pass it, schools would be required to designate male and female teams based on student birth certificates, although legal challenges, based on the Maine Human Rights Act, would almost certainly follow.

Accent Group’s Sports Direct rollout begins – ragtrader.com.au

This comes months after Accent Group – the Australian fashion and footwear conglomerate that manages 30 brands, including the likes of Hoka, Platypus and Hype DC – secured a deal with Frasers Group in the United Kingdom to manage its sporting retail business in Australia and New Zealand.
To mark Sports Direct’s first-ever Australian store opening, Accent Group has secured Collingwood’s Nick Daicos to star at launch on Saturday, November 15.
The second store opening will be at the newly renovated Chatswood Chase in Sydney, with that opening in March 2026. This forms part of an ambitious plan to open 30 Sports Direct stores over the next three years, across major cities.
“Australia’s passion for sport is unmatched, and that made it the perfect next step for Sports Direct,” Accent Group CEO Daniel Agostinelli said. “With Accent’s retail expertise and Sports Direct’s global capabilities, we’re creating a new kind of one-stop sports destination, combining global brands with unbeatable range.”
The new store opening will stock major sporting brands such as Nike and Adidas, alongside exclusive brands like USA Pro, Karrimor and Sondico. Sports Direct also sells into Australia via a dedicated website.
“We know sport is part of Australia’s DNA – from grassroots clubs to global stages – and we’re here to celebrate that,” Agostinelli said. “Whether you’re a weekend player or a professional athlete, Sports Direct goal is to help everyone to feel like a champion in their chosen sport – no matter the sport, no matter the ability, no matter the style.”
When the deal was initially struck in April this year, Accent Group and Frasers Group confirmed there will be 50 store openings over the next six years, which could reach 100 in the long-term.
Founded in the UK in 1982 and part of Frasers Group, Sports Direct operates more than 700 stores globally across Europe and Asia.
According to a report by CBRE, in collaboration with IBISWorld, Australia’s fitness and athletic clothing stores market was valued at $4.2 billion in 2024.

Knowing answers lie on defense, skidding Wizards take on Celtics – CBS Sports

If not listed, please contact your TV provider.
The Washington Wizards will be striving to end a five-game losing streak when they visit the Boston Celtics on Wednesday night.
Inconsistency at the defensive end of the court has been a major issue for Washington, which has allowed at least 119 points in six of its seven games. The Wizards enter Wednesday’s matchup allowing an average of 127.0 points per game. Brooklyn (127.6) is the only NBA team allowing more through Monday’s games.
“It’s all about defense,” Washington guard Bilal Coulibaly said. “Playing defense is going to get us more wins, so that’s what we gotta do. … We all have to be on the same page and focus.”
The Wizards held the Knicks to 22 points in the first quarter and 21 points in the fourth quarter during New York’s 119-102 home victory Monday, but Washington surrendered a total of 76 points in the middle two quarters.
“Just get better,” Washington coach Brian Keefe said. “That’s what you can control. That’s the great thing about our group. They’re always focused on what we can learn and then take that information and bring it into the next game, and I think we’re seeing that. We’re growing in certain ways. That’s all you can do.”
The Celtics have plenty of things to fix as well. Boston is 1-3 at home this season and will be desperate to avoid a third straight home loss Wednesday. Boston blew a 14-point first-half lead and dropped a 105-103 decision to Utah at home Monday. The Jazz scored 38 points in the third quarter after being held to 36 points in the first half.
“Our first half was great, and I think the third quarter, they got the best of us, and they played harder than us,” Boston coach Joe Mazzulla said. “It was a combination of just transition, offensive rebounds, and then some of their dribble-drive stuff, not being able to defend without fouling. So you have to be able to put a full game together. The first half was good. Third quarter cost us, and when it’s a close game like that, it’s anybody’s game.”
Boston shot 11-for-51 on 3-point attempts (21.6%) in the loss. The Celtics are shooting 31.2% from 3-point territory this season. Only Indiana has a worse 3-point field-goal percentage (30.2).
“It’s a new team, so we’re figuring it out,” Boston guard Payton Pritchard said. “We’re learning. We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to keep getting better at and we’re willing to work. So we’re going to get better at it and we’ll grow. And by the end of the season, I can promise we’re going to be a better team than when we started. So that’s a promise.”
Forward Kyshawn George is Washington’s leading scorer (17.9 ppg). Center Alex Sarr leads the team in rebounds (8.4), assists (4.1) and blocked shots (2.1) to go with 17.3 ppg.
Jaylen Brown (26.8 ppg) leads Boston in scoring, but guards Derrick White (26.3%) and Pritchard (21.3%) have both struggled from behind the 3-point arc.
“Just gotta figure out a way to play for 48 minutes,” White said. “It’s simple. I mean, it’s not simple, but that’s what we have to do.”

NFL trade deadline live updates: Latest rumors, news, updates on deals – USA Today

The NFL trade deadline is here, presenting teams with one last window to transform their roster for the stretch run of the season.
The lead-up to the 4 p.m. ET cutoff for swaps has featured a handful of more minor deals, with several notable starters and depth pieces being sent to new destinations. But there’s yet to be a true blockbuster. Might that change at some point on Tuesday, Nov. 4? There aren’t many big-name players firmly on the trade block, but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has already piqued interest by revealing Monday that he’s agreed to a deal on which he’s yet to disclose the details.
USA TODAY Sports will have live updates on the latest news, rumors and completed deals all the way past the deadline, so check back often Tuesday for all the freshest developments:
The New York Jets are selling off top players in stunning fashion.
Not long after the team agreed to trade two-time All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts, news broke that the Jets were also dealing defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2027 first-round pick, 2026 second-round pick and defensive tackle Mazi Smith, according to multiple reports.
Williams, 27, is a three-time Pro Bowl selection who had become the lynchpin of the Jets’ defensive line.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones revealed in September that he had asked about acquiring Williams in a potential deal for Micah Parsons but was rebuffed. Now, Jones lands a player who can fulfill the longstanding need to fortify the interior line.
Dallas earlier in the day agreed to acquire linebacker Logan Wilson from the Cincinnati Bengals in exchange for a seventh-round pick.
New York, meanwhile, now looks poised to dominate the NFL draft in the coming years with three additional first-round picks.
The Chicago Bears are bolstering their edge rush in light of an injury.
The Bears on Tuesday agreed to acquire defensive end Joe Tryon-Shoyinka and a seventh-round pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a sixth-round pick, according to multiple reports.
Tryon-Shoyinka, 26, is a former first-round pick who recorded 15 sacks in four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Cleveland, however, he has participated in just 6% of the team’s defensive snaps.
The Bears were looking for additional help along the defensive front after losing Dayo Odeyingbo for the season to a torn Achilles suffered in Sunday’s win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
“We’ve got some depth,” Bears coach Ben Johnson said Monday. “You can never have too many pass rushers. You can never have too many cover players on the back end either. That’s how I have always felt since I’ve been in this league. I know (general manager) Ryan (Poles) and his crew have been doing their due diligence all throughout the fall, all the way up until tomorrow to make sure we’re turning over every stone to make sure if there’s a way that we can improve this roster, we’ll do that.
The Seattle Seahawks aren’t done equipping Sam Darnold with downfield weapons.
The Seahawks on Tuesday agreed to acquire wide receiver Rashid Shaheed from the New Orleans Saints, according to multiple reports.
Shaheed, 27, is in the final year of his contract. The speedy receiver averaged 17.5 yards per catch last season but is down to 11.3 this year under first-year coach Kellen Moore.
His ability to stretch defenses could prove noteworthy for Sam Darnold, who leads the NFL in air yards per attempt at 9.6, according to Next Gen Stats.
The NFL trade deadline finally has its blockbuster deal.
The New York Jets are trading cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for two first-round picks, according to multiple reports.
Gardner seemed to confirm the reports on Twitter.
Amid questions of what key pieces the 1-7 could part with as the franchise’s reset continued under first-year coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, Gardner’s name seldom came up. The two-time All-Pro signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension that made him the NFL’s highest-paid cornerback.
Nevertheless, he’s now on the move.
Gardner moves from the bottom of the AFC to the top in joining the 7-2 Colts, who had a glaring need at cornerback with Charvarius Ward on injured reserve. In a year filled with bold moves, general manager Chris Ballard once again made an uncharacteristically bold strike in acquiring Gardner.
The Las Vegas Raiders granted Jakobi Meyers his trade request after all.
The Raiders are sending the wide receiver to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for fourth- and sixth-round draft picks, the Jaguars announced.
Meyers, who turns 29 on Sunday, sought a split from Las Vegas ahead of the season, when he asked for a trade in the summer while entering the final year of his contract. The Raiders denied his request, however, and he leads the team with 33 catches on the season.
At 2-6, however, the Raiders’ hopes of contending in the AFC West are dashed, and the team recoups some draft capital. Brock Bowers reaffirmed his standing as the focal point of the Raiders’ passing attack with 12 catches against the Jaguars in his return to action Sunday, but Las Vegas also is bringing along rookie receivers Dont’e Thornton Jr. and Jack Bech.
The Jaguars, meanwhile, receive midseason reinforcements for a passing attack that has been decidedly uneven in Liam Coen’s first season as coach. Rookie two-way threat Travis Hunter landed on injured reserve last week, while Brian Thomas Jr. is dealing with a high-ankle sprain, per multiple reports.
Jerry Jones might not be done dealing at the NFL trade deadline.
After completing a trade with the Cincinnati Bengals for linebacker Logan Wilson on Tuesday, Jones indicated on 105.3 The Fan that other moves were in process.
“Obviously with a (4 p.m. ET) deadline, they’re in the works, and they better be in the works or you’re going to miss this train,” Jones said.
Jones also said he envisioned Wilson, who is under contract through 2027, as a multi-year solution for the Cowboys’ defense.
“He knows how to get in the gaps,” Jones said. “For what we need right now, he can come in immediately right now and help us.”
Tuesday’s swap between the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys enacted change for the league’s two worst defenses in points allowed.
But did either unit really shift its outlook?
Neither the Cowboys nor the Bengals ended up with a high mark in our trade grades. Read here for the full explanation.
Jerry Jones has his mystery deal in place after all.
Just hours after casting some degree of doubt on the move he said earlier Monday was already complete, the Dallas Cowboys owner agreed to a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals to acquire linebacker Logan Wilson, according to multiple reports.
Wilson, 29, gets his trade request fulfilled after he was benched for rookie Barrett Carter. The sixth-year veteran has played in just 67% of Cincinnati’s defensive snaps this season, his lowest amount since his rookie campaign.
Jones also checks off another box in landing a player who will be under team control for multiple years, with Dallas now having the linebacker signed through 2027.
Leave it to Jerry Jones to figure out a way to seize the spotlight leading up to the NFL trade deadline.
The Dallas Cowboys owner commanded plenty of attention with his initial suggestion Monday that he had agreed to a deal that would not be revealed until Tuesday.
“A lot of action going on right now in terms of trading,” Jones said on “The Stephen A. Smith Show” on SiriusXM Radio. “We certainly have made a trade, and we may make a couple more trades before that deadline. We’ve made one. We possibly could make two more, and I’m going to wait and let you read about that when we send the papers in tomorrow.”
After Dallas suffered a 27-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night to drop the team to 3-5-1 at midseason, Jones seemed to strike a different tone, though he insisted his feelings hadn’t changed.
“We could conceivably see something that we ought to do, in spite of tonight,” Jones told reporters following the game. “And the answer to your question: There is no trade right now. … But there is one I can do. Without question, there is one I can do, and I’m leaning toward doing it.”
Only a few hours left to sort it all out.

The 2025 NFL trade deadline is at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
The cutoff comes just after the midseason point, with team owners having voted last year to push back the deadline by one week. After Tuesday, teams will not be able to make official trades until the start of the new league year in March, though they can unofficially agree to deals with one another after the completion of their season.

Cavaliers' Darius Garland: Could return Wednesday – CBS Sports

If not listed, please contact your TV provider.
Garland (toe) could make his season debut Wednesday against the 76ers, ESPN’s Shams Charania reports.
Garland, who underwent offseason surgery to repair his big toe, is expected to be upgraded on the official injury report. Whether that’s a questionable or a probable tag remains to be seen, but this is a huge boost for the Cavaliers. Once Garland does get the green light to return, it’s likely that he would have some type of restrictions early on.

Liverpool vs Real Madrid live updates: Champions League match team news, predictions and more – The New York Times

Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to Liverpool for the first time since leaving for Real Madrid in today's Champions League match.
The England right-back, having recently recovered from a hamstring injury, is not expected to start and instead looks likely to be named among the substitutes.
Madrid — managed by former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso — are one of five teams to have won all three Champions League matches so far this season, while Liverpool have won two of theirs.

Trent Alexander-Arnold mural in Liverpool vandalised ahead of return with Real Madrid
In the days before winning the Premier League last season, Arne Slot spoke out frustratedly about ‘truly pathetic’ time-wasting from opponents. The same message can be received very differently whether you are winning or losing.
Until recently, he had never lost three games in a row. As a head coach, he is in uncharted waters, because his reaction to a really bad run of form had not been tested.
Slot did adapt to managing a bigger team in Feyenoord than AZ, winning over skeptics. And he has since done it at Liverpool as well.
What he has not proven is his ability to return to the right decisions when nothing seems to be working and the whole world is watching.
As the seats emptied at a rainy Anfield, the overriding sound was from the Crystal Palace fans, “Can we play you every week?” being chanted as they celebrated a third victory of the season against Liverpool.
This was another painful night for Liverpool. The majority felt it was a sensible decision to rest key players with bigger games on the horizon.
Yet the Palace defeat still felt like an opportunity for Liverpool to get back on track. Instead, Slot chose to focus on what lay ahead.
There is certainly a willingness to stick by the manager and the team during such adversity, but the goodwill won’t last forever.
Liverpool are playing through a crisis and taking far too many beatings. It has to change.
Stretching back from their first meeting in the European Cup on May 27, 1981— a 1-0 win in which Alan Kennedy scored — Real Madrid have the better of this rivalry.
Liverpool won the first three matches but, as mentioned, Real Madrid won seven of the next eight.
Arne Slot's side did win their last meeting and will be hoping to repeat the trick at Anfield.
The last time the two sides faced off, on November 27, 2024, Liverpool recorded their first win since 2009 against the Spanish giants.
That ended a winless run of eight against Real Madrid (seven defeats, one draw).
Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo scored second-half goals to give Arne Slot's side the three points in a match epitomised by Conor Bradley's crunching sliding tackle on Kylian Mbappe (see above).
Arne Slot cannot yet solve the problems that he so clearly sees.
“Teams have definitely (found) a playing style against us,” he said at the Gtech Stadium after Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat by Brentford. “We haven’t found the answer. Going 1-0 down after five minutes doesn’t help. We simply concede too many goals. It definitely has to do with changing a lot in the summer. I didn’t expect four losses in a row.”
Nine league matches into 2025-26, Liverpool look like collapsing as defending champions, akin to five years ago. The results are bad — four consecutive league defeats for the first time since February 2021 — and the underlying tactical problems are even worse.
Real Madrid are the fifth team with a perfect record, but have looked less than convincing in slender home wins against Marseille on Matchday 1 and Juventus this week.
Their title odds have stayed at five per cent, marginally lower than Barcelona’s six per cent.
However, among the teams to have won all three games, their chances of finishing between ninth and 24th spot are the highest at 29 per cent.
They have been given a five per cent chance (one in 20) of winning the whole thing.
Liverpool rediscovered some of their mojo with a thrashing of Eintracht Frankfurt, whose games have all ended 5-1 (one win and two defeats).
The result increased Liverpool’s top-eight chances to 64 per cent and they are less than one per cent likely to be knocked out at this stage despite their shaky domestic form.
But their rivals’ displays have meant the odds of adding the European title to last season’s Premier League one have dropped from 15 per cent to 12.

Champions League 2025-26 Projections: Who will lift the trophy in Budapest on May 30?
Madrid's three matches in the league phase have brought three wins out of three, albeit accompanied by a couple of unconvincing performances.
Madrid went behind against Marseille but Kylian Mbappe's double turned things around despite Dani Carvajal's late red card.
Mbappe continued his fine goalscoring form with a hat-trick in Kazakhstan before Jude Bellingham scored the only goal of the game from close range in a tight tussle against Juventus last time out in Europe.
Here is how Liverpool's three European matches so far this season have shaken out.
Their opening match brought no shortage of drama as two very early goals were cancelled out by a Marcos Llorente double, only for Virgil van Dijk to steal the winner in stoppage time.
Victor Osimhen scored the only goal via the penalty spot as Liverpool lost in Turkey, before Slot and Co got back on the horse with a thumping win in Germany courtesy of five different goalscorers.
Real Madrid are in fifth, the lowest of the teams to have won all three of their opening three fixtures, because of their goal difference.
Liverpool, meanwhile, are in 10th place, narrowly outside the top eight automatic qualification slots.
They have six points from a possible nine after two wins and a loss from their first three games. Arne Slot's men can overtake today's visitors with a win, but they will need to win two or more goals.
