PORTLAND, Maine (WGME) — You may have seen people collecting signatures at the polls on Tuesday. Right now, there's a push to ban trans athletes, specifically from girls sports, and get that on the ballot next year.
We found groups collecting signatures in Portland and South Portland Tuesday.
Their proposed referendum would ban trans athletes from sports teams and locker rooms that don't align with a student's gender at birth.
That would contradict the current Maine Human Rights Act, which bans discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.
If the petition gets the 68,000 or so valid signatures needed to make the ballot, and voters pass it, schools would be required to designate male and female teams based on student birth certificates, although legal challenges, based on the Maine Human Rights Act, would almost certainly follow.
