GREENSBORO, N.C. — As the seasons shift, many people are looking to spruce up their gardens with pops of color and a cozy, Fall-like feel. At Guilford Garden Center in Greensboro, design specialist Rachel Cates shares tips for refreshing your outdoor space while keeping costs low.
This time of year, seasonal favorites like fall chrysanthemums, camellias, azaleas, pansies, and violas are abundant.
“For those that love shrubbery, some evergreens like the camellias and azaleas, pansies and violas are our favorites as well,” Cates said.
Gardening can add up quickly, but Cates recommends cost-saving strategies.
“You can look for mature plants that maybe have a larger canopy, as opposed to the size of the root ball,” She explained.  “This is a good way to spread them out. Also, making sure that you’re choosing the right plant for the right space, and knowing and understanding what it’s going to look like when it reaches its mature size.”
Fall is also the perfect time to start planning for Spring. If you’re transitioning a lawn into a new garden bed, Cates suggests covering the area with cardboard or a plastic tarp to suffocate the grass.
“You can also plant some nitrogen fixers like buckwheat or cover crop,” Cates explained. “These are things that you can turn over in the soil come springtime, and they’re going to add some nutrient value when you’re ready to do your spring planting.”  
With a little planning and the right choices, gardening can be both beautiful and budget-friendly.
