Every lottery winner who scoops a major prize is immediately confronted with a difficult decision when they go to claim their cash.
They have to choose either the lump sum or the full jackpot amount paid out in annual instalments – this is known as annuity.
“Each ticket holder will have the choice between an annuitized prize of $893.5 million or a lump sum payment of $410.3 million,” Powerball said in a press release.
Regardless of the decision they choose, the winners will not walk away with their full half of the prize.

The cash value of over $410.3 million is before taxes.
From this lump sum around $100 million will be taken off for Federal withholding tax at 24 per cent leaving $310.3 million.
But this is then subject to additional federal taxes at a rate of up to 13 per cent meaning another deduction, this time of around $50 million.
This would leave them each with $260 million if there are no other subtractions such as state and city tax.
The winner in Missouri, for example, will be required to pay a state tax withholding of four per cent on top of the other tax bills.
On the other hand, the winners can get the full share of the $1.8 billion win ($893.5 million) spread over 30 annual payments.
These increase by 5 per cent each year but each instalment is subject to tax changes and inflation.
“Opting for the annuity payment rather than the lump sum is generally advisable,” Andres Vargas Rodriguez from BetUS told The U.S. Sun.
“This option not only offers potential tax advantages but also provides annual payments that increase over 30 years, making it easier to adjust gradually to your new financial situation.”
Despite these benefits, the majority of winners opt for the lump sum where they know all the money they will have and open themselves up to more investment opportunities.
While it is advised to take the reliance on an annual income for financial stability and to ‘adjust’ to new finances – regardless of which payout method they choose, the winner will be taking home a substantial sum that will be difficult to come to terms with.
Aside from this key piece of advice, there are other precautions the winner must take.
The main one is keeping their signed lottery tickets safe and details of their win private.
If not, they open themselves up to legal battles similar to those of Powerball winner Edwin Castro as well as those looking to take advantage of someone who has just come into money.

A Waterford man woke up nearly half-a-million euro richer after the Halloween Lotto draw – but didn't know about it until the next day, when he finally checked the ticket locked in his car.
Thankfully, the player found his lucky ticket in plenty of time to claim his €405,711 winnings on the EuroMillions October 31 draw. The ticket was purchased from Mulhearns Foodstore in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford. He explained: “I heard the news breaking the following day.
"But after leaving the ticket in my car over the weekend, I didn’t check it until Sunday evening. I had to scan the ticket three times to believe what I was seeing – ‘You’ve Won Big!’ I couldn’t stop smiling for hours. I was so delighted!” He added that he's planning a big Christmas celebration to mark the win.
Elsewhere, an online player in Dublin woke up this Wednesday €37,722 richer, after matching five numbers in Tuesday night’s EuroMillions draw. The winning numbers in last night’s EuroMillions (11th November) draw were: 4, 22, 32, 36, 47 and the Lucky Stars were 2 and 10.
While there was no winner of the EuroMillions jackpot worth €108,416,075, over 42,000 players in Ireland won prizes in the EuroMillions and Plus games. Emma Monaghan, spokesperson for the National Lottery said: “What fantastic news for one of our EuroMillions players. Huge congratulations to our newest big winner. Today, we’re urging all online players to check their emails and accounts to see if they’re our latest winner.”

A Mega Millions lottery ticket sold at an Iowa convenience store won $3 million in the Nov. 11 drawing.
The ticket is the first big win since Mega Millions revamped the lottery game in April, according to the Iowa Lottery. It matched the first five numbers, but missed the Mega Ball, making it one number away from claiming the estimated $965 million jackpot. This is the game’s largest jackpot since December 2024.
Kwik Star at 1200 Chatham Ave. in Norwalk sold the Mega Million ticket.
It was one of three tickets in the country to claim a prize of $3 million or more from the drawing. Another $3 million was won from a ticket sold in New York and $5 million was won in Arizona.
Kwik Star will receive $3,000 from the Iowa Lottery for selling the winning ticket.
The Nov. 11 winning numbers were 10-13-40-42-46 and Mega Ball 1.
The winner has not yet claimed the prize, according to the Iowa Lottery. The Mega Millions prize in Iowa must be claimed within 180 days by going to the Iowa Lottery’s main office in Clive.

SALT LAKE CITY — Rep. Kera Birkeland has heard from several older constituents on fixed incomes who are struggling to keep up with rising property taxes, and the Morgan Republican has an unconventional proposal for relief: legalize the lottery in Utah.
The Beehive State is one of the few remaining holdouts in the United States that doesn’t offer some kind of lottery, along with Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii and Nevada. While the state’s politics generally favor unregulated business, the prevailing faith — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints — which is followed by a majority of state lawmakers, is opposed to all forms of gambling.
Utah and Hawaii are the only states that prohibit all forms of gambling.
But Birkeland said legislative researchers estimate the state is missing out on as much as $200 million in revenue from lottery tickets, which is currently going to neighboring states like Idaho, Wyoming and Arizona as Utah residents cross state lines to purchase tickets.
“I talked to a gentleman whose dad is 92 years old, and his property tax bill has gone up so much that he is having to put his house up for sale,” she told KSL.com. “He’s paid his fair share, why is he being forced out of his home to pay those taxes?”
The full details of the bill have not yet been made public, and Birkeland says she has yet to write a stipulation into the bill that would require tax revenue gained from lottery sales be used to offset the tax burden of older adults on fixed incomes.
“I am personally more concerned about senior citizens living on fixed incomes,” she said. “It’s not in the legislation, but something I’m looking into.”
The Utah Constitution prohibits “any game of chance,” so Birkeland’s proposal includes a constitutional amendment that would need support from two-thirds of lawmakers in both chambers before being approved by a majority of voters in the upcoming general election.
Birkeland isn’t the first Utah lawmaker to try to change the state’s prohibition on gambling, and previous legislative efforts have failed to gain traction. A 2018 U.S. Supreme Court decision struck down a federal law that barred sports betting in most states, and while several states moved to legalize betting, Utah was not one of them.
A state senator from Provo proposed a bill in 2021 to legalize playing “skill-based games,” but the proposal met resistance over concerns that it would open the door to gambling. A proposal to legalize betting on horse races similarly stalled in 2019.
Birkeland’s proposal is already getting pushback from one powerful Utahn. Although the governor doesn’t have the power to veto proposed constitutional amendments, Spencer Cox said during his monthly news conference last week that he is opposed to the idea.
“I’ve said many times that I think lotteries and gambling in general are taxes on people who are bad at math and they do more harm than good,” he said.
For her part, Birkeland is aware that passing the bill will be an uphill climb, but said she’s “up for a challenge.”
“I’ve ran a number of bills that try to cap property taxes and try to reduce government spending, and none of them ever go anywhere,” she said. “And so, for my colleagues, for individuals who are opposed to the lottery where the revenue would reduce property taxes, I’d say, ‘Then what?’ … I think that’s a really important conversation to have on Capitol Hill as we go into this session, because that is really the No. 1 concern of my constituents. And if we need to have the conversation around a lottery to elevate that and actually address the issue, then so be it.”
