Of course, it’s highly unlikely to land millions of dollars from the lottery.
Current odds of landing a Powerball jackpot are around one in 292.2 million, and for Mega Millions, it’s even more unlikely at one in 302.6 million.
Still, it happens all the time to unsuspecting Americans, who suddenly come into life-changing sums and must figure out how to handle the financial situation they find themselves in.
First, they must realize that they’ve won, and many don’t for some time.

Along with regular announcements and press releases to help make unknown winners aware, state lotteries also have a window for them to come forward before the cash is forfeited entirely.
Those windows vary by state and can 180 days to up to a year at most, and Akshay Khanna, CEO of Jackpot.com, told The U.S. Sun that there are several reasons for that.
Jackpot.com was founded in 2017 and operates as an online lottery platform that lets Americans purchase tickets from their devices remotely and securely.
Khanna explained that the lengthy claim windows are “primarily for accounting and budgeting purposes” for lottery officials.

That way, if a player doesn’t end up coming forward, the state can quickly redistribute the money, whether that’s back into lottery games or in it’s general fund for programs to benefit residents.
“Having a deadline allows lottery organizations to finalize their records and allocate unclaimed prizes elsewhere,” he said.
Not only that, but officials figure there’s a slim chance the winner would claim it after 365 days if they hadn’t already.
“Ultimately, if a prize is unclaimed after a year, it’s very unlikely that a winner would ever come forward,” Khanna noted.
For many players, it still does take them a long time to come forward and claim their prize, even if they knew they’d won right away.
Khanna told The U.S. Sun this can happen because the players “simply don’t realize that they’ve won.”
Some states have differing deadlines for when lottery players can claim prizes. Most allow a 180-day or one-year window before tickets expire and the money is forfeited. Below are the 180-day states:

He explained that one of Jackpot.com’s biggest advantages for players is that it notifies customers that it was there ticket that won big, so there’s virtually no way they could miss it.
The platform then helps “store their ticket securely until they chose to claim it.”
Otherwise, the long claim time is typically a direct result of the players taking smart steps to connect with “financial advisors, tax professionals, and lawyers” beforehand.
“Winners typically want to have a plan for the money prior to claiming,” Khanna said.
“Oftentimes they will create trusts or other legal entities to handle the money for tax or anonymity purposes.”
The CEO emphasized that the best tip he can offer players is to “consult with financial advisors, tax professionals, and lawyers prior to making any decisions.”
Professionals will also advise the players on what the best option to collect the funds are for them — a lump sum distribution or annuity payments.
Players who win big on lottery tickets typically have a choice to make: lump sum or annuity?
The two payout methods can impact how much money you get from your prize.
Annuities pay out slowly in increments, often over 30 years.
Lump sums pay all at once but in a smaller amount, as taxes are withheld in one go. That means 24% of your prize goes to Uncle Sam right away. Many states tax winnings as well.
Annuities can provide winners time to set up the financial infrastructure required to take in a life-changing amount of money, but lump sums have the benefit of being taxed only once.
Inflation is also worth considering when making a choice, as payouts do not adjust with the value of a dollar. That means that you’ll likely be getting less valuable money towards the end of an annuity.
Each state and game pays out prizes differently, so it’s best to check with your state’s lottery to confirm payment policies. A financial advisor can also help you weigh the pros and cons of each option.
Experts have varying opinions on whether to take the lump sum or take the annuity.
Debate over which option is better has been going on for some time between lottery experts and lawyers.
Khanna said the annuity “guarantees wealth” with the consistent payments every year and less of a tax implication.
Even so, the CEO admitted that the lump sum “offers higher expected returns over the long term” with the right steps.
No matter what, every decision comes down to the lucky winner.

Unlucky? Here are 13 crazy things more likely to happen than winning the lottery
The major lotteries in the United States offer two jackpot payout options: annuity and cash.
The annuity option is paid out over time. There is an immediate payment and then 29 annual payments after that, increasing by 5% each year.
The cash option is significantly lower than the advertised jackpot, but it is paid in a lump sum. You don’t have to wait decades for all the money.
In some states, like New Jersey, you can win a lottery anonymously. That wasn’t always the case, but now winners are able to stay anonymous under a law that was signed by Gov. Phil Murphy.
In other states, a winner’s name and hometown are a matter of public record. Check with your state lottery for more information.

Jackpot-winning lottery ticket worth $870,000 sold in Allegheny County – CBS News

Watch CBS News
/ CBS Pittsburgh
Someone who bought a lottery ticket in Allegheny County won a jackpot worth $870,000.
The Pennsylvania Lottery said a Cash 5 with Quick Cash ticket matched all five balls drawn on Sunday: 1-20-25-38-40. Whoever bought that ticket at the Uni-Mart on Fern Hollow Road in Moon Township won the $870,000 jackpot. The lottery says the store that sold the ticket will get a $5,000 bonus.
More than 13,000 other Cash 5 with Quick Cash tickets also won prizes. The lottery says players should check every ticket every time.
To play Cash 5 with Quick Cash, players pick five numbers from 1 to 43. To win the jackpot, a player has to match all five numbers.
It’s the latest lottery ticket to win big in the Pittsburgh area.
Earlier this month, a jackpot-winning Match 6 Lotto ticket worth $1.2 million was sold at the Citgo in South Huntingdon Township. In October, a scratch-off worth $3 million was sold at the Shop ‘n Save in Richland Township, and before that, a Match 6 Lotto ticket worth $950,000 was sold at the Super Mart convenience store on Pine Hollow Road in Kennedy Township.
The Pennsylvania Lottery says it’s the only state lottery to direct all proceeds to programs that benefit older residents. Since sales began in 1972, the lottery says it has contributed more than $37 billion to fund programs like property tax and rent rebates, care services and prescription assistance.

Watseka Elks Lodge #1791 hosted its 15th annual Boobie Bingo last Saturday night, Nov. 8, at the lodge. Those who wish to participate in playing bingo must pre-purchase tickets, which are sold a couple weeks in advance. Scott Kingdon, of the lodge, was the caller for this event.
Originally, the event was conducted in order to help Iroquois County residents fighting breast cancer; however, because so many are affected by different types of cancer, the event was expanded to cover all cancers and is also known as Bingo for Cancer Fighters. All monies raised remain in Iroquois County and can be used however they best help the family, such as with groceries, utility bills, gas for trips to doctors and treatments, etc.
Organizers of the event try to raise the most money without a lot of expense to the lodge. According to Cheryle Laurent, an Elks organizer of the event, “We decided to go to area businesses to ask for donations. These donated items we can use to put together for bingo prizes. Those bingo prizes vary in value of between $150 and $200 each.”
There are several on the list who donate each year, and, according to Laurent, “Donate they do! We have so many gifts donated that we have started passing out door prizes.” She said that number is usually 20-30. In addition to the door prizes, “we have seven to eight baskets to raffle off,” Laurent continued, adding Elks also “sell t-shirts and huggies.”
Over the past 14 years, $95,077 has been raised and that provided help to 132 families. This year, 175 bingo players attended and $11,715was raised, bringing the grand total raised over 15 years to $106,792.
Laurent said there is a large group of volunteers who help make this event such a huge success. That list, in additon to Laurent, includes Amy Reetz, Cindy Coughenour, Cody Fredricks, Cy West, Dawn Tobeck, Deb Cookie Swigart, Erik Shay, Jill Tarro, Kat Thiele, Kim Gocker, Leslie Myers White, Linda Hasbargen, Lori Yates, Marilyn Conger, Mark Lehman, Jake Tarro, Marsha Knauth, Pam Thurston, Robert Gray, Scott Kingdon, Scott Zumwalt, Stephanie Wingerter, Teresa Castonguay, Todd Oster, Traci Bishop and Mike DeMarse.
Laurent said “We (Elks Lodge members) look forward to helping more people and having more bingos. Are we going to change the world? No, but maybe we can help it be a little nicer. We do what we can!”
Although the event is done for this year, donations are accepted throughout the year. Checks can be made payable to Watseka Elks Lodge 1791 and can be mailed or dropped at 111 N. Third, Watseka, IL 60970.

Shiva Co-op Battle Appears in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis – Siliconera

There’s a new way to fight Shiva in Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis, as her Co-op Battle is now available. People can challenge her in this way for one week.
Square Enix and Applibot offered more insight on what to expect from this fight. Up to three people can join in to face Shiva in-game. Doing so nets someone Co-op Medals, which can be swapped for Weapon Parts. Summon Memories and weapons can also be earned. Some Co-op Battle Missions will also appear. Getting through them will net people 20 Stamina Tonics and 1,500 Blue Crystals.
While this marks Shiva’s debut as a Co-op Battle, she’s already been in the game for a while. So have her Summon Weapons, so people have another option for getting and upgrading them. These are the Shiva’s Blade for Cloud and Shiva Cannon for Barret. Both deal MAG ice damage to enemies and offer +50% fire resistance to the characters when equipped. Other traditional summons, like Ifrit, also appear.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is available for mobile devices, with the Shiva Co-op Battle appearing until November 2, 2023. The game will eventually come to PCs as well, though Square Enix and Applibot haven’t set a release window for that version yet.
