Italian lotteries aren’t only for Italians – Times of Malta

The Italian SuperEnalotto lottery is currently offering a €199.4 million jackpot.
That’s the biggest lottery jackpot in the world, bigger than what’s up for grabs in the American Powerball and Mega Millions lotteries combined.
SuperEnalotto has always been a favourite of lottery fans, including some very well-known celebrities. George Clooney played SuperEnalotto. So did Elizabeth Hurley and Paris Hilton. It was reported that Madonna purchased 100 SuperEnalotto tickets during her 2012 world tour and while she didn’t win the jackpot, she did win the lottery’s €120,000 second division prize. (Madonna donated her winnings to build a school in Malawi).

The SuperEnalotto draw takes place tonight and there’s no need to travel to Italy to purchase tickets. There’s a way that you can play SuperEnalotto for a chance at winning its enormous jackpot without leaving the comfort of your home in Malta!
Simply sign up at theLotter.com, the world’s leading online ticket purchasing service. TheLotter will send its local agents in Italy to buy official SuperEnalotto lottery tickets on your behalf. Mega Millions climbs to highest level since ticket price increase – KSBY News

The Mega Millions jackpot will reach its highest level since the multistate lottery increased ticket prices to $5 in April. The jackpot for Friday’s drawing is an estimated $843 million, lottery officials said.
The jackpot has grown steadily since a player in Virginia won $348 million on June 27. No ticket has matched all six winning numbers — 11, 14, 17, 50, 57 and Mega Ball 6 — since then. This year there have been four winning Mega Millions jackpots.
The last time the jackpot was larger was when a California woman won $1.269 billion. Friday’s $843 million prize ranks as the eighth-largest in the game’s history.
The winner may choose to receive $843 million in 29 annual payments through an annuity or take a one-time cash payout of $391.7 million. Most winners opt for the lump sum.
The odds of matching all six numbers are about 1 in 290 million. Matching only the five white balls — without the Mega Ball — wins at least $1 million. The odds of winning that prize are 1 in 12.6 million.
Mega Millions is played in 45 states, plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The only states that do not participate are Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Paris cemetery holds lottery for space near Jim Morrison and Chopin – qz.com

Marc Piasecki
People are strange when it comes to their obsession with celebrity, but a Paris cemetery is hoping the most dedicated of fans are willing to pay handsomely to be buried near their idols.
The Pere Lachaise cemetery is the final resting place of some of history and pop culture's biggest names, including Jim Morrison of The Doors, writer Oscar Wilde, Marcel Marceau, and Frédéric Chopin. Now the body that oversees that graveyard is offering people the chance to have a plot of their own there — or other historic French cemeteries, including Montparnasse (which counts Jean-Paul Sartre and Jacques Chirac among its residents) and Montmartre (which houses the remains of impressionist painter Edgar Degas and Charles-Henri Sanson, the royal executioner who executed Louis XVI).
Thirty gravestones from the cemeteries are in disrepair and can be bought for €4,000 (roughly $4,500). Whoever buys them, however, must restore the monuments and then buy the burial plot next to the headstone they restore.
Due to overwhelming demand, officials plan to run the sale as a lottery. The drawing will be held in Janauary.
Offering eternal rest next to the stars is a compromise, Paris city officials say, that both respects the dead and lets residents be buried within the city, where there is very little room remaining for graves.
Families are responsible for maintaining gravestones and monuments in Paris, but some graves have become abandoned over time, causing the gravestone to crumble.
To be clear, none of the gravestones that are up for sale belong to any of the cemetery's most famous residents, so you might not be elbow to elbow with Jim Morrison, but you could be adjacent.
And, at the moment, applications for these purchases are only open to people who live in Paris — and they'll have just six months to restore the gravestone and a limited timeframe after that to buy the plot.
Burial plots are sold either in perpetuity (€17,668/$20,294) or can be leased for 10, 30 or 50 years, at prices ranging from $1,120 to more than $6,000.

For Mega Millions players, the next chance to win the jackpot will be this Friday, November 7.

A similar jackpot drought hit the Powerball lottery this year, when it reached a staggering $1.7 billion.
The Powerball jackpot was eventually split between a player in Missouri and a player in Texas.
Recent Mega Millions lottery winners include Deborah Sexton in North Carolina, who clinched $2 million in August.
Sexton recalled her shock when she heard the news.
She said: “I was like, ‘How can this be happening to me?’.
“It was overwhelming. I was just like, ‘This can’t be.’”
Lottery winners need to decide whether to take a big jackpot as a lump sum or as annuity payments.
What is a lump sum?
What are annual payments?
Sexton took home $1,435,001 after she paid all of the required state and income taxes on her winnings.
In another instance, a $1 million Mega Millions ticket was found in the state of New Jersey in December last year.
But the winning couple didn’t realize that they had won until five months later, in May 2025.
They had a whole year to come forward from the date the numbers were drawn, according to New Jersey lottery rules.
