Prep talk: LAUSD sponsors middle school basketball competition – Los Angeles Times

For years, the Los Angeles Unified School District has teamed up with its Beyond the Bell afterschool program to enable middle schools students to have a variety of sports experiences.
This year, the LAUSD launched a basketball program that mirrors the high school experience with coaches and practices for middle schools that want to participate. It ended on Monday with championship games at one of Intuit Dome’s indoor courts, with Woodland Hills-based Hale Middle School defeating Stephen M. White of Carson 27-22 in the boys’ final. Portola of Tarzana won the girls’ final 34-24 over El Sereno Magnet Charter.
The basketball leagues were launched this fall, with coaches getting paid and games being played on Saturdays. Thirty-two teams advanced through regional play to secure playoff spots.
Sun Valley Poly will dedicate its new gym on Friday to one of its most famous alumnus, the great Gail Goodrich, one of the few in sports history to win a City title, NCAA title with UCLA and NBA title with the Lakers, the triple crown.
LAUSD sports coordinator Trent Cornelius is hopeful the model can be expanded to soccer in the spring, focusing on skill development, structured training and stronger alignment with high school athletics.
It offers students who can’t afford to play club basketball a free opportunity to compete for their local middle school, where transferring is far less an issue than in high school.
Cornelius said the challenge will be finding additional coaches at the middle school level.

A EUROMILLIONS player is celebrating after winning a life-changing €500,000 prize last night.
The Tuesday night player purchased their Quick Pick ticket on Wednesday, October 29, at Donnybrook Fair on Morehampton Road in Donnybrook, Dublin 4.

The winning numbers in the Tuesday, November 4, EuroMillions Plus draw were: 05, 09, 14, 39, 42.
The National Lottery has urged EuroMillions players in Dublin to carefully check their tickets today, as one person now has a ticket worth an incredible €500,000.
The top prize winner is advised to sign the back of their ticket and keep it safe.
They should contact the National Lottery Prize Claims team on 1800 666 222 or email claims@lottery.ie and arrangements will be made for them to collect their prize.
National Lottery spokesperson Sarah Orr appealed to players to check their tickets following a week of big wins for players in Dublin: “It’s been a memorable few days for National Lottery players in Dublin and the week isn’t over yet!
“On Saturday night, a Lotto player in Rathfarnham won the top prize of €1million in the weekend Lotto Plus One draw and now just a few days later, we have another top prize winner in the capital!
“Tuesday night’s EuroMillions Plus draw saw a player in Donnybrook scoop the €500,000 top prize, earning themselves the title of 29th EuroMillions Plus top prize winner of the year to date.
“Today we are urging all of our EuroMillions players who purchased their ticket for Tuesday night’s draw in Donnybrook Fair on Morehampton Road, to check their tickets carefully.

Meanwhile, as there was no winner of the €85,169,986 jackpot on offer in last night’s draw, Friday’s jackpot is now set to soar to an estimated €100million.
Players dreaming of winning big are reminded that tickets can be purchased in-store, through the National Lottery app or online at http://www.lottery.ie ahead of the 7.30pm cut-off time for sales on Friday evening.
And a lucky scratch card player has told how he “still can’t believe it” after winning a €30,000 prize.
The Cashword Doubler Scratch Card was purchased at Centra Ashbourne, Garden City, Ashbourne, Co. Meath.
The Kentstown man, who received the game as a gift, said: “I still can’t believe it, it’s very surreal.
“I was sitting at the kitchen table when I scratched the card.
“I immediately called my partner over to show her. She wouldn’t believe me, even though it clearly said €30,000 right in front of us.”
The Meath man plans to use the prize money to buy a new van and save the remainder for the future.
A Dublin man also made his way to Lottery HQ to claim his €19,706 EuroMillions Match 5 prize from October 3.
His winning ticket was purchased from Mount Merrion Stores, 75 Deer Park Road, Mount Merrion.

N.Y. Lottery: After using $1 Powerplay feature, NYC player claims $2M in Powerball prize as one-time lump sum – SILive.com

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A lottery player in New York City has claimed $2 million in a doubled Powerball second prize, according to lottery officials.
Chi Lee Lee of Elmhurst, Queens, matched the first five numbers in a Powerball drawing on Feb. 26, according to the New York Lottery. When purchased, Chi Lee Lee opted for the $1 Powerplay feature that allows players to multiply a non-jackpot prize up to 10 times. It automatically doubled the second $1 million prize to $2 million.
The ticket was purchased at Lucky Huang Grocery Store, located at 8261 Broadway in Elmhurst, Queens.
The winning numbers for that evening were: 24, 29, 42, 51, 54 and Powerball 16.
Chi Lee Lee opted to receive a single lump-sum payment of $1,224,481, after required withholdings.
The winning numbers for the Powerball game are drawn from a field of one to 69. The Powerball number is drawn from a separate field of one to 26. In order to win the jackpot, players must match all five white balls in any order and the red Powerball number.
Powerball tickets can be purchased at any New York Lottery retailer for $2, seven days a week. The deadline for purchasing a ticket is 10 p.m. on draw nights.
Drawings are held every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday at 11 p.m., and the New York Lottery urges players to buy tickets early to avoid last-minute lines.
Players can securely check their tickets on the New York Lottery app.

Winning EuroMillions numbers for £45m jackpot and Thunderball revealed – Daily Express

BRUGGE EUROMILLIONS DRAW TESTING ROUNDTonight’s EuroMillions draw may have just made one lucky player a multi-millionaire with a jaw-dropping jackpot of £45million up for grabs.
The National Lottery EuroMillions winning numbers for Friday, October 24 are: 07, 08, 25, 31, 45. The lucky stars are: 07, 12.
The Millionaire Maker Selection game has produced a UK millionaire with: VLZS07617.
And finally, tonight’s National Lottery Thunderball winning numbers are: 06, 10, 24, 28, 32. The Thunderball is 06.
The EuroMillions, played across nine European countries, has created hundreds of millionaires in the UK since it launched in 2004. While jackpots of more than £100 million aren’t uncommon, tonight’s £34 million prize remains a significant sum – enough to clear debts, buy homes, and secure futures.

Thunderball is fast-paced and straightforward. Players choose five main numbers from 1 to 39, along with a Thunderball from 1 to 14. Matching all five numbers and the Thunderball can earn a top prize of £500,000. Draws happen twice a week, giving players frequent opportunities to test their luck and feel the excitement of the draw. The game rewards both big wins and smaller successes, making it perfect for those who enjoy regular chances to win.
The National Lottery reports that the chance of selecting all seven numbers correctly in EuroMillions is just 1 in 139,838,160.
However, some numbers have appeared more often than others. Number 20, for example, is the standout, having been drawn around 70 times.
For smaller wins, the odds are more promising. Players have a 1 in 22 chance of matching two numbers, and the overall likelihood of winning any prize in EuroMillions is approximately 1 in 13.
