Lottery expert reveals claim process info and offers tips to 'guarantee wealth' – the-sun.com

More from The Sun
There’s also a new way to purchase official lottery tickets online
SHOULD they win big, a lottery expert has urged players to keep several considerations in mind.
The process of obtaining money from games like Powerball or Mega Millions can be complex and have downsides without caution.

Of course, it’s highly unlikely to land millions of dollars from the lottery.
Current odds of landing a Powerball jackpot are around one in 292.2 million, and for Mega Millions, it’s even more unlikely at one in 302.6 million.
Still, it happens all the time to unsuspecting Americans, who suddenly come into life-changing sums and must figure out how to handle the financial situation they find themselves in.
First, they must realize that they’ve won, and many don’t for some time.

Along with regular announcements and press releases to help make unknown winners aware, state lotteries also have a window for them to come forward before the cash is forfeited entirely.
Those windows vary by state and can 180 days to up to a year at most, and Akshay Khanna, CEO of Jackpot.com, told The U.S. Sun that there are several reasons for that.
Jackpot.com was founded in 2017 and operates as an online lottery platform that lets Americans purchase tickets from their devices remotely and securely.
Khanna explained that the lengthy claim windows are “primarily for accounting and budgeting purposes” for lottery officials.

That way, if a player doesn’t end up coming forward, the state can quickly redistribute the money, whether that’s back into lottery games or in it’s general fund for programs to benefit residents.
“Having a deadline allows lottery organizations to finalize their records and allocate unclaimed prizes elsewhere,” he said.
Not only that, but officials figure there’s a slim chance the winner would claim it after 365 days if they hadn’t already.
“Ultimately, if a prize is unclaimed after a year, it’s very unlikely that a winner would ever come forward,” Khanna noted.
For many players, it still does take them a long time to come forward and claim their prize, even if they knew they’d won right away.
Khanna told The U.S. Sun this can happen because the players “simply don’t realize that they’ve won.”
Some states have differing deadlines for when lottery players can claim prizes. Most allow a 180-day or one-year window before tickets expire and the money is forfeited. Below are the 180-day states:

He explained that one of Jackpot.com’s biggest advantages for players is that it notifies customers that it was there ticket that won big, so there’s virtually no way they could miss it.
The platform then helps “store their ticket securely until they chose to claim it.”
Otherwise, the long claim time is typically a direct result of the players taking smart steps to connect with “financial advisors, tax professionals, and lawyers” beforehand.
“Winners typically want to have a plan for the money prior to claiming,” Khanna said.
“Oftentimes they will create trusts or other legal entities to handle the money for tax or anonymity purposes.”
The CEO emphasized that the best tip he can offer players is to “consult with financial advisors, tax professionals, and lawyers prior to making any decisions.”
Professionals will also advise the players on what the best option to collect the funds are for them — a lump sum distribution or annuity payments.
Players who win big on lottery tickets typically have a choice to make: lump sum or annuity?
The two payout methods can impact how much money you get from your prize.
Annuities pay out slowly in increments, often over 30 years.
Lump sums pay all at once but in a smaller amount, as taxes are withheld in one go. That means 24% of your prize goes to Uncle Sam right away. Many states tax winnings as well.
Annuities can provide winners time to set up the financial infrastructure required to take in a life-changing amount of money, but lump sums have the benefit of being taxed only once.
Inflation is also worth considering when making a choice, as payouts do not adjust with the value of a dollar. That means that you’ll likely be getting less valuable money towards the end of an annuity.
Each state and game pays out prizes differently, so it’s best to check with your state’s lottery to confirm payment policies. A financial advisor can also help you weigh the pros and cons of each option.
Experts have varying opinions on whether to take the lump sum or take the annuity.
Debate over which option is better has been going on for some time between lottery experts and lawyers.
Khanna said the annuity “guarantees wealth” with the consistent payments every year and less of a tax implication.
Even so, the CEO admitted that the lump sum “offers higher expected returns over the long term” with the right steps.
No matter what, every decision comes down to the lucky winner.
Someone recently had their fortune change considerably after landing the $1.22 billion Mega Millions jackpot, and the ticket was purchased in California.
Another Mega Millions prize worth $1 million is also remains unclaimed in Florida as officials search for the anonymous winner.

SCENE HOLIDAY BINGO – thescenecalgary.com

There are two kinds of people: those who decorate their Christmas trees in November and greet the season with “every year is a new beginning,” and those who are tired and skeptical.
We’re aiming for the optimistic route this time. Like it or not, the holidays sweep all of us in any way, so why not take the lead and see if it turns out fun? To help with that, The Scene put together a Holiday Bingo — things to try this December.
Just a heads-up: a few squares may involve alcohol or a bit of public embarrassment. Cut this one out, share it with friends, and see who scores the most.

Lotto players' 'rolldown' tip for best time to buy won them jackpot, expert says – the-sun.com

More from The Sun
The U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with a lottery expert to uncover the two ways to hack the system – one easy and one difficult
A COUPLE put their basic math skills to good use and took advantage of a simple lottery rolldown feature to rake in over $25 million, an expert has claimed.
Professor Tim Chartier has revealed exactly how they optimized the timing of their lottery plays to hack the system using a simple trick, as well as a more complex method to scoop a jackpot.

Everyone dreams of becoming a millionaire – or even billionaire – but unless you think up the next big invention or company, the easiest way for you to secure a fortune is by playing the lottery.
While the lottery is easy to play, it’s far from easy to win.
The odds of winning a big prize in a lottery game such as Powerball or Mega Millions are roughly one in 300 million.
A crazy amount of things are more likely than winning the lottery, including being struck by lightning, becoming president, or even being hit by a meteorite.

LUCKY DAY
Lotto player in shock after finding $50k winning ticket while helping mom clean
While some players have scooped up jackpot prizes the old fashion way – by beating the odds and correctly guessing the numbers – others have become millionaires by hacking the lottery system.
The U.S. Sun spoke with Tim Chartier, professor of mathematics and computer science at Davidson College, about two distinct ways to “hack the system” when it comes to lotteries, in an exclusive interview arranged by casino.ca.
Chartier explained that the first method, taking advantage of the lottery’s “rolldown” feature, is relatively easy to implement – although it still requires intelligence, effort, and resources.
High school sweethearts Jerry and Marge Selbee from Michigan did just that, scoring millions of dollars.
Americans have hours to get $6,000 from $17.5m insurance data breach settlement
'Walmart quality' grocery store chain confirms shop doors will close in 2026
AT&T customers hit with $4 monthly 'recovery' fee under new December 1 policy
Social Security rolling out first TWO payments over $900 this month in just hours
“Jerry and Marge Selbee didn’t beat the odds, they figured them out,” Chartier told The U.S. Sun, explaining that they had taken advantage of the structure of winnings.
Jerry, a math fanatic, was first intrigued by the lottery in 2003 when he noticed that the new lottery game Cash Winfall had a unique feature called a “rolldown.”
Chartier detailed how, if the jackpot reached a certain amount and no one had won the top prize, the prize money would then “roll down” to lower-tier winners, significantly increasing the payouts of players who matched five, four, or three numbers.
“Recognizing this, the Selbees calculated that by purchasing large quantities of tickets during these rolldown periods, they could profit,” said the lottery expert.
Every time there was a rolldown in the Cash Winfall game, the couple would buy hundreds of thousands of tickets at two local convenience stores in Massachusetts.
They did that for years, spending roughly $600,000 per play, seven times per year.
The Selbees exploited similar opportunities in other lottery games across the US, applying the same mathematical principles to games with favorable conditions.
Jerry and Marge Selbee didn’t beat the odds, they figured them out.”
By hacking the lottery system using mathematics and probability, the couple took in an astounding $26 million from various state lottery games.
The Massachusetts State Lottery discontinued the Cash Winfall game in 2012 due to players such as the Selbees exploiting the rolldown feature.
However, some lotteries may still have similar features in their payout structures, such as by redistributing unclaimed jackpot money to lower-tier prizes.
A second, much more difficult way to hack the lottery, according to Chartier, is by taking advantage of imperfections in the system.
The lottery system was designed to be random with strict measures in place to uphold the integrity of the game.
For example, each ball in the Powerball game weighs roughly 80 grams and can only deviate from the standard by three-tenths of a gram, Chartier explained.
Additionally, the $55,000 Powerball drawing machines are stored in a locked vault that is kept under constant video surveillance.
The U.S. Sun spoke exclusively with professor of mathematics at Davidson College, Tim Chartier, who revealed the truth behind lucky numbers.
Scooping up a jackpot prize in a lottery game such as Powerball or Mega Millions involves correctly guessing a series of numbers.
Many players swear by certain numbers, sticking with digits such as birthdays, anniversaries, or ages – but do these numbers statistically carry the luck that players believe they do?
According to Chartier, they do.
“I think a number is lucky if you have fun playing it and it improves your experience of winning,” he said.
“The big lotteries are, statistically speaking, a chance to dream of being a multi-millionaire or even billionaire. If playing a certain number heightens that experience, then yes!”
However, the lottery expert clarified that aside from the feel-good implications of playing your “lucky numbers,” no number is truly lucky when it comes to the lottery.
“All numbers are equally likely,” said Chartier.
He explained that even though all numbers are equally likely, some may seem to appear more often.
For example, rolling a six-sided die six times does not guarantee that you will roll each number exactly once.
No one is permitted to hold the balls due to security reasons, and they must be touched with gloves on to prevent dirt exposure.
The balls are retained in black briefcases to prevent exposure to light, and a random set is used each drawing, unknown to even lottery officials until 90 minutes before the scheduled drawing.
Despite the stringent procedures in place, Chartier admitted that lottery numbers are not entirely random, resulting in a higher probability of certain combinations.
For example, if the mixing process of the lottery balls was not perfectly uniform, certain balls may be more likely to appear.
Likewise, if one ball were slightly heavier or lighter than the others, it could have a different likelihood of being drawn.
In 1980, a group of players rigged the Pennsylvania Lottery by injecting weighted balls into the lottery machine, ensuring that only certain numbers could be drawn.
Although this instance involved tampering with the system, it highlights how flaws in the physical lottery system could theoretically be exploited.
However, hacking the lottery system using this method “is not easy to exploit in today’s world,” according to Chartier.
Modern lotteries have strict quality control measures in place to ensure randomness, such as standardizing the weight of balls and conducting repeated tests.

Another expert shared a list of reasons why winners take so long to claim their prizes – and top tips to “guarantee wealth.”
