National Lottery funding 'will help preserve Tameside's heritage' – BBC

Martin Nestor is from the Wooden Canal Boat Society in Ashton-under-Lyne
A National Lottery grant will be spent on preserving Tameside's "unique" heritage, it has been announced.
The Greater Manchester borough will share £200m with up to 20 other areas across the United Kingdom.
Tameside Council will now decide how to spend its share of the money.
One of the borough's best-loved heritage assets is the Portland Basin Museum in Ashton-under-Lyne, home to the Wooden Canal Boat Society (WCBS).
Eleanor Wills is leader of Tameside Council, which will decide how the money is spent
The Portland Basin Museum is housed within the restored 19th Century Ashton Canal Warehouse.
It attracted about 100,000 visitors in 2024.
The WCBS has six canal boats.
One of them, Hazel, was built in 1913 to carry salt but now provides "wellbeing trips" for people.
The WCBS received a previous National Lottery grant in 2014.
Engineer Martin Nestor, 60, said: "Restoring boats is a passion and it gives me a sense of purpose.
"They're all working boats and it gives me so much pleasure."
Eleanor Wills, leader of Tameside Council, said: "What we've got to do is take stock of the heritage we've got and how many more visitors we can have in places like the Portland Basin Museum.
"This is a really big opportunity for us in Tameside to connect people with their communities."

The National Lottery Heritage Fund's Heritage Places scheme aims to better connect people with the past in the places they live, work and visit.
The fund's chief executive, Eilish McGuinness, said: "There are so many heritage treasures to be excited about.
"We are now in a supportive relationship with Tameside Council so we're trying to help them think about their heritage and work with their communities."

There are more than 300 listed buildings in Tameside, including Ashton Town Hall, which was home to the Museum of the Manchester Regiment before it closed in 2015.
The museum's collection is now packed away in storage and it is hoped work can begin on restoring the historic building, which opened in 1840.
The town hall's roof has been repaired and Tameside Council has appointed architects to look at options for the building's future.

Kyrgyzstan Launches Unified State Lottery Infrastructure – The Times Of Central Asia

@iStock
Kyrgyzstan is consolidating all private lottery operations into a single, state-controlled system as part of a national initiative to modernize the sector and align it with international standards. The project is being implemented by the Information Security Center in partnership with the state-owned enterprise Kyrgyzloto.
Under the new framework, all types of lottery draws in the country will be brought under state oversight. Authorities say the system will provide full transparency over financial flows, enable real-time monitoring of sales and payouts, and protect citizens from unscrupulous operators.
The Lottery Information Processing Center will manage real-time data collection on ticket sales, draw results, and prize pools. Financial and fiscal oversight will be conducted by the Ministry of Finance and the State Tax Service.
“Our task is to agree on the rules for conducting lotteries and to form a fund for targeted deductions. We intend to unify the draws and channel the proceeds into useful areas,” said Sherik Kasmaliev, director of Kyrgyzloto, during a press briefing.
Government projections estimate that over the next ten years, the national lottery could generate approximately $1 billion in tax revenues and licensing fees.
Officials also believe the launch of a unified state lottery system will provide a legal alternative to illegal gambling, help curb gambling addiction, and return billions of som previously lost to unlicensed foreign platforms back into the domestic economy.
All data processing and storage infrastructure will be located within Kyrgyzstan, which project developers say will enhance cybersecurity and reduce the risk of capital outflows.

Canada’s Stablecoin Regulations: The Future of Global Crypto Payroll Solutions – OneSafe

Canada has rolled out its stablecoin regulations, and boy, they’re shaking things up in the crypto payroll department. These measures are designed to make digital payments more reliable and efficient, setting the stage for their widespread adoption across various global markets. So, how do these regulations enhance the credibility of stablecoins—and what can startups and fintechs learn from them as the financial landscape shifts?
The latest federal budget from Canada lays out a comprehensive plan for fiat-backed stablecoins. This framework includes requirements that help ensure these digital currencies are safe and trustworthy. The goal? To create a supportive environment for digital payments, especially when it comes to payroll. For instance, issuers of stablecoins now have to maintain reserves, which should help people feel more secure using them.
The fallout from Canada’s stablecoin regulations isn’t confined to its borders. It could have a global impact on crypto payroll solutions, and here are some reasons why:
Aligning with international standards means that stablecoin payroll solutions are now seen as legitimate and secure. This could make multinational companies more willing to use crypto payroll, especially for remote teams.
Stablecoins are already cheaper and faster than traditional banking methods. Thanks to regulatory clarity, companies can confidently utilize them for payroll, slashing costs by up to 60% and enabling rapid international payments.
The new regulations will require payment service providers to follow national security and consumer protection guidelines. This simplifies scaling for payroll platforms, as they know they meet Canadian—and global—regulatory expectations.
The regulatory push could lead to more fintechs developing compliant payroll solutions using stablecoins. This might give businesses and employees a broader selection of payroll options worldwide.
With Canada increasing consumer awareness about stablecoins and their risks, more workers could feel at ease accepting salaries in crypto. This might speed up adoption, especially among digital nomads and remote workers who prioritize flexibility.
Canada’s actions may encourage other countries to step up their regulatory efforts, leading to a global chain reaction that enhances the adoption of crypto payroll solutions.
The evolving regulatory landscape in Canada offers important lessons for fintech startups in Asia facing similar challenges:
Startups should push for clear, national regulations that define stablecoin types, reserve requirements, and operational standards. Ambiguity can hinder innovation and increase compliance risks.
Fintechs should create products that include consumer protections while also being innovative in payments and remittances. Best practices in risk management can help build user trust.
Working with regulators and established banks can help startups position themselves as partners. This cooperation can accelerate acceptance and market integration.
Startups should carefully consider the implications of relying on global stablecoins and look for ways to develop local currency solutions that fit national monetary goals.
Investing in compliance and risk management early can prevent regulatory issues and reputational harm. Startups showing commitment to security and compliance will be better prepared for scrutiny.
Canada’s stablecoin regulations mark a significant step toward integrating crypto payroll solutions into the mainstream. By offering a secure framework, the country is not just safeguarding consumers but also positioning itself as a front-runner in digital payment innovation. This could hasten the global shift toward stablecoin payroll, making it more accessible and efficient for companies to pay employees worldwide. As things evolve, startups and fintechs need to stay nimble, embracing regulatory clarity while driving innovation in the crypto payroll sector.

Players can buy tickets for Mega Millions online at the New York online lottery apps. Mega Millions has jackpots that reach over a billion.
Like Mega Millions, Powerball is a multi-state draw game that features massive jackpots and is available in 45 states. Powerball boasts the world record for biggest lottery win of all time, with a player in California winning a $2.04 billion jackpot in November 2022.
Cash4Life is a $2 ticket for which players must choose five numbers from 1 to 60 and one number from 1 to 4 to be the “Cash Ball.” Winning numbers are drawn daily. Prizes range from $2 to $1,000 a day for life (for-life annuity of $365,000 per year or a one-time lump sum payment).

Winning numbers are drawn twice daily. Prizes range from $1 to $500.

Winning numbers are drawn twice daily. Prizes range from $1 to $5,000.
As lottery draw games are based completely on randomness and luck, there is no real strategy. That being said, we do have some tips for optimizing your play. These include utilizing play choices that have a higher chance of winning overall (Box vs. Straight, for example) and playing smaller in-state draw games with fewer entrants as compared to the large multi-state draw game. While jackpots are usually smaller in these games, your chance of winning increases dramatically.
In addition, if you need help picking numbers for the draw game of your choice, you can use our lottery number generator.
Your first step is to pick a New York online lottery app. Your choices here are Jackpot.com, Jackpocket, and theLotter. All of which offer access to in-state and multi-state draw games.
Once you’ve decided on an app to download, you can claim our exclusive bonus via the links at the top of this page. These links will redirect you to the lottery courier website if you’re on a computer or to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store to download the app. If you don’t click through using our links, you may not receive a welcome bonus, so don’t skip this step!
Next, it’s time to register. You’ll be asked for your name, date of birth, and some other information to verify your identity and that you’re old enough to play the lottery. Once your account has been registered and verified, it’s time to head to the next step.
In order to play, you need funds to purchase lottery entries. Jackpot.com, Jackpocket, and theLotter offer a variety of deposit methods, which we cover in detail below. Remember to practice responsible gambling and deposit within your means.

To withdraw, you can utilize either of the following methods:
If you win the New York online lottery, you can withdraw your prize directly from the app as long as it totals $600 or less. If your prize is $601 or more, it must be claimed in person. In this case, the app you played on will mail you the physical ticket so that you can bring it with you to claim in person.
Keep in mind that winning tickets expire one year from the date of the draw, so don’t waste any time in claiming your prize, especially if it’s large.
Taxes must be paid on all New York Lottery wins, regardless of their size. If they are under $5,000, those wins must be manually reported. If they are over $5,000, you’ll have taxes automatically withheld. We’ve listed the withholding percentages below for your reference.

Prep talk: LAUSD sponsors middle school basketball competition – Los Angeles Times

For years, the Los Angeles Unified School District has teamed up with its Beyond the Bell afterschool program to enable middle schools students to have a variety of sports experiences.
This year, the LAUSD launched a basketball program that mirrors the high school experience with coaches and practices for middle schools that want to participate. It ended on Monday with championship games at one of Intuit Dome’s indoor courts, with Woodland Hills-based Hale Middle School defeating Stephen M. White of Carson 27-22 in the boys’ final. Portola of Tarzana won the girls’ final 34-24 over El Sereno Magnet Charter.
The basketball leagues were launched this fall, with coaches getting paid and games being played on Saturdays. Thirty-two teams advanced through regional play to secure playoff spots.
Sun Valley Poly will dedicate its new gym on Friday to one of its most famous alumnus, the great Gail Goodrich, one of the few in sports history to win a City title, NCAA title with UCLA and NBA title with the Lakers, the triple crown.
LAUSD sports coordinator Trent Cornelius is hopeful the model can be expanded to soccer in the spring, focusing on skill development, structured training and stronger alignment with high school athletics.
It offers students who can’t afford to play club basketball a free opportunity to compete for their local middle school, where transferring is far less an issue than in high school.
Cornelius said the challenge will be finding additional coaches at the middle school level.
